Help! 1996 GTI shot oil out back!!

I just bought a used 96 GTI.. It had been sitting for 2 years. replaced plugs. Took battery to autozone and they said it was good. Trickle charged it all night. Put it back in this morning, and after a few tries it finally started! Yeah! But..... it started smoking and It was shooting oil from the back!! This is my first ski, what is wrong with it???

There is probably nothing seriously wrong with your ski. Alot of people experience the same issue after their ski has sat without running for a long period of time. Oil from the oil tank can drip into the engine ( for various reasons ) and collect in the bottom of the cases. When the engine is finally started the oil in the bottom is brought up to the top and then pushed out the exhaust. You need to ride the ski for a hour or two in order to clear the excess oil from the engine. This oil situation is going to be hard on the spark plugs so you should take a spare set in case you foul plugs(NGK BR8ES).
If you experience this oil problem after the ski has not been sitting a long time then you have a more serious problem and the engine may need serious repair. Good luck,

the crank seals weep a little. they have had 2 years to weep. run it out. let it smoke. just make sure it isn't going in your neighbor's kitchen door. (don't ask.) if it smokes a little at the beginning of each weekend, it isn't an issue. if it smokes alla time, you need to do the crank.

If they fogged it real well before storing it will smoke. First time I light mine up in the spring, we dont have a mosquito problem!

Must say this thread is good timing for me. I just got in from the driveway where I finally got my 96 gtx to start. Same deal, exhaust water has a lot of oil in it. There is smoke everywhere. Naturally, it took my 10 minutes of this to realize the house's AC was behind the ski.. awesome. The boat has never done this before. I took my brand new plugs out after running it for 15 mins and they were basically dripping oil. Running the boat in this condition really won't damage anything? My ski has been sitting for a year.

Well I just got back from the lake!! works great.. It probably blew a gallon of oil out... maybe not that much, sure seemed like it though. and man it smoked like a bonfire! And when it was first blownig oil out it was in my garage... so needless to say, the wall, a spare fridge, and several other things were sprayed with oil!! oh well, live and learn... thanks for the quick replies...

smoke means you got enuff oil!!
