New to these water crafts. I am a pilot and decided to stick with the earth. Now that I have a 1098 Sportster, I'm having trouble. First, can't find a reliable seadoo repairman so I'm doing it myself. The starboard engine will not start. I've been told many things and figure nobody really knows. I get two beeps when the key is inserted but still only one engine starts. I checked the obvious, battery, cables, new solenoid, still nothing. There seems to be a drain on the battery when it's connected. Don't know why. Does it with the key out and all things off.
If you get two Beeps, shouldn't the MPEM be good or am I assuming this?
Any help please. Thanks. Don.

What engines do you have?

I will move this to the correct forum where you will get a much better response.

Welcome aboard.

Watercrafts
1998 SeaDoo Jet Boat twin 717 engines.
Do you know if when you hear the two beeps that the module is ok and look elsewhere for the problem?
I feel angry that SeaDoo doesn't make a part, the control module, for this boat. Other than that, it is in excellent condition but not being able to get that part, anywhere, makes it worthless.

Thanks, Don.

Moved to the two-stroke boat section with a 30 day redirect from the Meet and Greet section.

If you don't get great results post a similar question in the 2-stroke PWC forum as there is even more people in that forum.

I assume it cranks over with the starter? Or did I miss that data.

Ok, let's get into this,,,

Does it crank?
What is the compression? (Plugs removed, full throttle, spark plug wires grounded).
Single or dual batteries?
Have you checked for spark?

Get that info and we will go from there.

compression was 140 in all 4 cylinders. Haven't checked for spark in that engine. One battery, brand new. I have a short somewhere I think. This must be why the battery drains when connected, even with the key out.
Still like to know if hearing the two beeps mean the controller, mpem, is ok or not. Anything else I can fix. Can't get one at any price.
Thanks, Don

The two beeps means it recognizes the lanyard, it does not mean its good. This has 2 push buttons, you need to verify the switch (push button) is good--ohm it out with a meter. You should get 12v on one of the little wires on the solenoid when you press the button. Ohm the switch with no power hooked up.

It sounds as if the starter solenoid isn't receiving 12v when the start button is pressed. Will the engine start if you jumper the solenoid to engage the starter?

Also, I believe your boat has two MPEM's, thus you can swap one for the other if necessary?

There is a surge supressor inside the MPEM. I guess if this device was leaking, it could cause the battery to drain overnight. Other possibilities include an MPEM that didn't enter sleep mode, or a leaky rectifier/regulator diode.

I dunno why you couldn't use a ski MPEM, but I'm not sure how differently the twin screw boats are wired, exactly.

The engine will turn over when I jump the solenoid but not fire.
One MPEM
If the mpem is bad and I can't find one, I may have to rewire the whole bot using 2 mpem''s from jet skis. Lots of wire!!!!!
Thanks.

Right, I see MPEM situation, thx. More specifically to confirm 2nd engine no start issue, it has no spark regardless of 1st engine is running or not.

In that case, it seems MPEM is half dead. Perhaps a broken internal solder connection, but they can be a real challenge to get into.

One member here, @minnatonka4me, may know where to obtain your unobtanium MPEM, or he may have suggestions for alternatives.

Found the repair manual online today. They have many mpem test in it. Wish the 2 certified mechanics did this. I paid them to guess. One said it needed the carbs rebuilt even thou the engine never ran, he knew this????? The other said it's probably the mpem cause hey, what else would it be???? You're are your own in this world.
Thanks, Don.

Having the electrical schematic is a necessity, for sure. I bet you already tested the start button circuit, that would seem an obvious place to begin. But if it won't start by jumping the starter solenoid even while the one is running, that's not good. I wouldn't expect there's two power feeds, but maybe if it's actualy two MPEM's sandwiched in one housing or something like that.

I'm just not familiar with how it's handled in the twin screw, sorry, double your pleasure and double the fun I suppose. :)

After checking with a meter and other diagnostic equip, I come to the conclusion I do need the dreaded MPEM,,, that they don't make or ell any longer. I can't seem to find one. It's part no. 204470184 for a 1998 Sportster. Twin 717 Rotex engines. Man, the boat is in great shape, except for this. Seems like bad business practice to stop supporting a boat just because it's older.
MPEM number 204470184
Thanks all.

PM 99spxxx or Minnetonka4me they are bro's why may have it. Tonka can verify your's too I think, he has a fixture for some of them.

two things you may want to check before replacing the MPEM. I have the same boat as you do and had a similar problem, first check the fuse in the black electrical box where your solenoid is located. Second and this was my problem, the CDI which is in the same black electrical box has a integrated ground built into it via the bottom mounting screw. If its corroded it can cause serious non firing issues. Your engine will turn over with no problem but won't fire/spark or will be very weak. To verify if this is your problem replace the screw with a nut and bolt and run a temporary ground wire from there to another location on the engine. It'll take all of 5 minutes to check and verify...

So it seems my only hope to fix this boat is to put 2 separate MPEM's in from SeaDoo JetSki.
My question is, what number MPEM would that be?
Please, any help appreciated!!! Don

Did you contact Minnetonka4me? He can test mpem's, not sure about yours but it's worth a try first.
