Hi,

Just picked up a 93 SPX and the guy I bought it from said that it will go about 100 feet and they he has to pull the choke to keep the motor running. It's going to be pretty cold here in Michigan this weekend so I probably won't be able to get it out on the water to test for myself. Any suggestions on where to start trouble shooting? It doesn't have any grey fuel lines at the moment. Also, he started it for me and it seems to run pretty strong on the trailer.

Thanks,

SharkX

It seems to be some sort of fuel delivery problem. The engine isn't getting enough fuel and cutting out...pulling the choke will increase the amount of fuel getting to the engine.

How a pwc runs on a trailer can be quite different than how one will run in the water....one that has no trouble starting out of water may not even start in water. It is best that you get this thing in the water and see what happens.

If it is way to cold to ride (you could always wear a sweater and rain jacket with some gloves) a nice alterative is take it to the launch, back it into the water on the trailer and give it a go....don't give it too much gas unless you are on a clean cement ramp, otherwise you may suck something up. See how that goes and get back to us.

What you will find upon inspection is that your fuel system and carbs are gummed up. Try running with the fuel selector on -on- and -reserve- to see if that remedies any of your issues. But, it's almost winter... So, why don't you just go ahead and get rid of your grey fuel lines if you have them, rebuild the fuel selector, and rebuild your carb(s). Pulling the choke is masking a lean condition which can and will destroy your engine.

save yourself time and MONEY,, pull the carb or carbs and remove and clean the little filter/s

as posted choking is covering a LEAN motor

it will ruin the engine
