Hand Grip Mod

Some have asked about replacing the handgrips on their ski. Most talked about having to cut them to length so they would fit. I simply unscrewed the originals, bolted in a 3/8" spacer I cut and slid the new on the bars. The added length on the grips fits my hands better too. The grips are Schwinn bicycle grips, $7.99 at Academy.

Old purple pair that is sticky once they get hot.

Bolted up to the bars using stock bolt and washer.

New handgrip with nickle siliconed at bottom to protect the end of the grip.

Well done - excellent photos to help other members see how easy this mod is.:)

I am not sure about that. I would think if your bars have the grips bolted on it should work just fine. I just didn't want to cut up a set of new grips when the opportunity was there to make it work.

Funny, I always used the nickel trick on my bikes and motorcycles, and ended up using it on my new grips on the XP also. I used BMX motorcycle grips instead of the seadoo grips.

I used a plastic plug instead of your spacer, but accomplished the same thing.

Nothing is wrong with them, but after 10-12 years, they fall apart and turn to gum. We are swapping them out for aftermarket grips that are new and not gummy.

When I bought mine, I didn't want to order stock replacements and have to drive back later to pick them up (70 miles round trip:ack:), so I just picked up whatever they had in stock for the dirt bikes they also sold.

Next time, I could probably use the bmx stuff from walmart.

And to clarify, I didn't "use a plastic plug" as I stated, but took the plastic end cap that was on the seadoo and dremeled it down to make the plug.

My stock PINK Seadoo grips got torn up from a bad tie down with a rope to a houseboat. I hated the pink think anyway, so I picked up stock black Seadoo grips which look a lot better.

I prefer a fatter grip on the Seadoo type compared to the skinny aftermarket grips.

cordetta....heck with the grips,...good look'n truck, stud...
BTW...good thread on grips though

Thanks for the compliments on the truck. One of those other projects that keeps me busy, here's a better pic of her.

No I don't have a machine shop, I used an old metal sleeve and just cut it on my miter saw with a metal blade and then dressed up the edges.

So BMX, or dirt bike grips will work. That is good to know. My Seadoo place is close to me so I could go that route also. I know the projects, I've got like 3 of them. don't have pictures of them though.

I was told that only ATV grips work for PWC's. I bought a pair of cheap ATV grips for like $7 but the ends of them tear right off easily for some reason. They just slid right onto the bar and i didnt use a plastic sleeve thing that screws on.
