Hi all,
I've just been quoted $499 in parts and an undisclosed sum for labour (but probably $200+) to replace an only-very-slightly sloppy steering (handlebar end) on my 1998 GTX LTD. There is a small amount of vertical lash on the tiller. As far as I can see from the Workshop Manual the offending parts are minimal and likely to cost around $50-70. It looks like the job is reasonably straightforward. Has anyone had experience with this and what parts are likely to be required? Or whether it is necessary at all - ie.. does it get much worse? Or is there some adjustment that can be done to tighten it up? Can the appropriate parts be purchased on this site if required? The ski has done a total 102 hours and is in otherwise pretty mint condition.

Steering

I've never seen or heard of any gtx that had a problem with sloppyness in the steering column. Seems strange that you have this issue especially with such low hours on the ski. There are no adjustments that can be made. I'm wondering if the ski has been in a accident that has caused damage in that area. I'm sure you can get any part you need from the site here on the forum.
Good Luck, DAWG

Ride hard!.........

I'd ride it hard till it's shot!........

As DAWG said, there is no adjustment for the "slop" but there is adjustment on the rear to center your steering alingment.

Whats causing your slop is the keyways of the steering bar shaft and the integrated flat key cam that the steering cable connects to. Once worn, it will get some "slop" in it. But, that usually comes with a lot of age and a lot of abuse. Like DAWG said, maybe a wreck or someone forcing the handlebars. It could also be caused from someone sitting on top of them, bearing down their weight. Especially if the ski is beached.........

These parts are replacebale........but for the cost, I think I'd just deal with it till the time comes.

You'd have to take it apart to see, but your thrust arm, #90 and 91 may be all needed replaced (about $12) or you may have to replace both the thrust are and teh steering stem, #17( about $60).

Looking at the drawing and a enough mechanical know how to put a sprung spring back on the starting cap of your lawn mower and you could do it. Hell, if not, ...........post it here, you'll get the help, I'm sure.

But, I'd ride it till it bothered me. ...........I'm cheap:rofl:
