GTI SE 170 - Oil on Spark Plug Threads

Was finally time to de-winterize both my ski’s today (did oil change and fogged the cylinders in the fall).

I fired them up and let each one run with the hose for a minute or so to let the fogging oil burn off before swapping the plugs.

When I pulled the plugs, I noticed (and was reminded) that all 6 plugs had some oil on their threads. When I fogged the cylinders last year the oil was already there, so it’s not fogging oil.

Has anyone else had this happen? Or any ideas? There were no performance issues with the skis last year, and no faults.

When I did the oil change last year I was able to get 4L out of each ski, instead of the 3.5L the manual says, and I came to the conclusion the dealer had over filled them when they were new.

Wondering if the extra pressure caused by the extra oil could have forced its way into the combustion chamber? Or is is likely an O ring or valve cover gasket? There is no visible oil in the plug tube.

You are correct. Only half way up the dipstick is all it should be. Even slightly over filled will force oil into the cylinders causing lower top end speed and smoking exhaust fumes.

High oil level will cause oil to get into the intake and seep out the spark plug tube and into the plug.get it to the safe level and keep an eye on the level.

Some more googling also led me to the possibility of tube seals. The oil level is perfect now so after I run them for a few hours I’ll pull the plugs and see if there’s still oil in there.

Anyone know how involved the tube seal replacement is? Can it be done without a trip to the dealer?

Easy peasy
