I have a '96 GTI and noticed there is about 1/2" water in the engine compartment with some substance mixed in that looks like the SeaDoo XP-S synthetic grease. It was running fine last time, maybe a little more sluggish than usual but barely a difference. Any thoughts on what I might check to see where it is coming from? I have the shop manual but can't find anything in there related to this. Thanks!

nah, water gets in ,then can break down grease from the PTO assy, or any oil sustance that the hull might have had on it, or the minerals that contaminating the lake/river itself,...variable, as long performance is right, wouldn't worry...

I agree... If your deeply concerned, drain it out and put some clean paper towels in the bottom. Then after a day or so carefully take them out and see if they are still clean..... I did this a few times to pinpoint a leak on my GTI.

Grease Mystery

There is much more than just a little grease mixed into the water. It is no doubt the synthetic grease. The color, smell, and consistency is just like the tube I have. I just used a whole roll of paper towels to soak it all up. It was probably 75% grease just pooled under the engine. It looked to be close to the amount of grease that comes in the tube when you buy it (maybe 3/4 cup). Do you still think it's no big deal? It was serviced the summer before last at the dealer. Its been used maybe 6-8 hours since. Is it possible they just squirted it in somewhere not paying attention and it's been sitting there? I can't imagine that volume of grease leaked out of something. I hate to take it to the dealer (which isn't close) and have them give me a big fat bill.

I'm somewhat mechanically inclined, (although it's been many years), as I took auto shop for 3 years and replaced my own clutch. However, I have not worked on water crafts before other than to change spark plugs. Even if I have to take it in, I'd like to know what is going on so I know I'm getting honest work. Any other help or advise is appreciated.

yah, a-holes probably loaded the gun wrong, squirted everywhere, then hid it, by putting it under the engine cradle, only place for grease is the zerk fittings...

it is quite possible for a min wage summer mech's helper who never held a grease gun before to get grease everywhere BUT in the zerk fittings for the PTO. and they charged you $100 an hour for his work. the PTO is the only place inside the hull where grease goes. it holds maybe 2 ounces if really stuffed full.
