gsx-l backfire

98 gsx-L backfiring out of the exhaust. What could the possible problem be?

It was running fine for about an hour, beached the ski then it wouldn't start back up. Got it back home and on the dock and it just backfires out the exhaust. Occasionally starts up but shuts down after a few seconds or if the gas is touched.

check the compression, the nif good, cut plug wires back 1/4in and install new plugs.

just my 2 cents but sounds like timing or carbs.
