Need help with this one. Took boat out Sat... no problems. Sunday, heading out about a half mile..Boat came to sudden stop and stalled. few min later would start..pretty much idle speed.. battery seemed weak.. Anyway,on way back to ramp sounded like grinding and stalled. Didnt want to risk anymore potential damage and had Seatow pull us in. Any ideas? But engine seemed strong

Have you checked the oil in the impeller cone lately???????

Could the motor have seized???

Have never checked that..engine idles, but with aweful grinding noise. seems to coming from that area..Is that something i could check and replace myself.

Grinding isn't good... but if you haven't checked it over yet... then it can be anything.

I would take the spark plugs out... and the top engine cover off. That way, you can rotate the engine by hand, and hopefully hear if it's from under the flywheel... internal of the engine... or down in the pump.

Once you figure out the region of the power system... we can start to diagnose.

Ok.. took plugs and eng cover off. would rotate smooth and quiet for one rotation.. starting another required wrench then smooth again..feels like something below ... did notice bottom left plug wasnt quiet tight enough.. what ya think?

Welllll............ That's not good.

So... you can get almost a full revolution, easy by hand... and then there is a spot that you need a wrench to get past? When it gets to the tight spot... does it make a noise?

Do any of the spark plugs show any damage?

All plugs look good...During that spot it sounds like bottom of boat has a pair of vise grips on it. no noise... did notice starter gear was up when it would get stuck at that spot, when trying to crank.

If the sound is from underneath... then it's a pump issue.

I think you will need to take the nozzle off, and look for something stuck in the pump. If you don't see anything... then the gears aren't happy. You may also want to drain the gear case oil to see if there is any metal in it.

Found out i blew a piston..zero compression... all others were fine.. anyway they want 4300 for engine rebuild, new impeller and wear ring.. Mech said impeller and wear ring were soo bad they could not cool engine.. What ya think?

well , if you where running a pump with a terrible seal then your pump would have been cavitating real bad, and that air would keep the cooling system from working properly , so thats definitely a possiblity.

Welllll......................

Yes, it is possible to have cavitation that is so bad, that you will loose cooling. But, if that was the case, you would be reving to full RPM, and only be going about 10~15 mph. So, the question is... where you getting good speed before this happened?

I guess the next question is... how bad is the damage? On the 240 engine... if you didn't throw a rod though the side of the engine... then you probably lost the oil drive gear, and roasted the piston.

Did the mechanic say which cyl gave up?

If you are good with a wrench... we can walk you though a rebuild... and I can even offer some help with the machine work, if you don't have a shop local that can handle it. Depending on the damage... the rebuild could be cheap.

Bottom left (looking from back) piston, also remember that plug was very loose when checking it out..no rod thru side..dont know about oil drive gear.. When they realized i was there UPS driver the price dropped to 3400...which includes rebuild, impeller and wear ring.. Oh speed was say.. alittle sluggish

Well... the engine will be dry... but you will normally damage a single jug to the point where it stalls the engine.

i damaged a single jug mine was the top port side and it was due to the oil drive gear failure! i did my rebuild for 1100 bucks including oil drive gear 100 dollar manual and tools parts and machine work did work myself good luck

Do you think changing impeller and wear ring is something i could tackle myself... It would save me some money and ill learn something. Going to let boat mech do rebuild. 240efi

The wear ring is a aluminum housing which is very expensive about 500 bucks or so you can service your self though as others and my self have done on this wonderful site and the impeller you ll need a big socket to take it off but it is pretty straight forward

couple of you guys mentioned (oil drive gear) on crank...going to replace while eng is apart.. i cant seem to find..does anyone know part number? thanks again guys for all your help.

All the parts explosions say you need to buy 2 of them (since it's a split gear) but that part number is a full kit with new bolts. So just order one.
