Google Earth as a nautical map?

We are planning on moving to a neighborhood that has a boat launch on the northern tip of Lake Houston, and they "say" that there is a 15' deep channel from the ramp to the main body of the lake.

I ordered a lake map, but it is on backorder.

I am going to look at Google Earth to see if I can see any deep areas and map out the coordinates. Then tomorrow, we will take the boat out and try to navigate our way up to the boat ramp.

Is Google Earth accurate enough to do this?

Or can anyone suggest ways to figure out if it is navigable up to the boat ramp? Other than just running it, which we will likely do tomorrow.

How about a fish finder it tells how deep the water is. Or do like they did in the old days rope and a weight or small anchor. Mark the rope at different depths.

We have a depth finder but forgot the google maps in the truck. So we worked our way up and turned around when the water hit 3 feet.
