Is there any additional information anyone can give me before I fire up my 98 GTI? Do I need to pump in oil to the bottom end? Do I need to bleed any lines and if so which ones?

Thanks,
Jamie

when i did mine, i poured a little mystery oil into each cylinder.

as for bleeding, there should be an oil bleed screw on your carb. follow the oil supply line onto your carb, and the bleed screw will be right on that line, right as it connects to the carb. open it and let the oil fill the lines, then close it. a little oil will spill onto the bottom of the bildge, this is normal of course.

also, you may want to actuate the oil pump lever by hand. hold it open to make the oil pump go at full blast, while keeping the throttle at idle. this will let a rich mixture of oil into the motor.

if you do these things it will smoke like hell, but thats a good thing.

Oil Injection?

Although this is an older post, it should be pointed out that their is no oil bleed screw attached to the carb of a 717 motor. If you are in need of bleeding your system, the oil pump itself has a bleed screw that can be opened or removed for bleeding. The lines at the rotary plate, one for each intake, can be removed and bleed by holding the VROI pump lever wide open while turning over.

After oil pump work/replacement, you can also use one tank of premix, 40:1 or 50:1. After going through one tank of gas, the oil system should be primed.
