Gelcoat Repair Cost?

I'm shopping for a 4Tec Sportster and came across a 2003 nearby that looks pretty good except for a large, nasty scrape in the hull (see photo).

Do any of you have a rough idea of what it would cost to professionally repair? Thanks.

I had a chunk of gelcoat and glass taken out by my dock and a maniac driving another boat speeding through a no wake zone and it cost me $700 for a professional glass rebuild and gelcoat spray. The work was guaranteed for life and this person is highly rated. My sugesstion to you is to stay away from that particular boat. That looks like the lower keel portion of the boat and who knows how long it has been like that. If the glass has absorbed water, which I am sure that it has, it most likely has already started de-laminating. If that is the case, what looks like a minor scrape could result in thousands of dollars for repairs, fiberglass removal, rebuilding, etc. I have had three Sea-Doo boats thus far.... just my two cents.

repair is hard to estimate for your area...but I would say to have a professional fibreglass guy do it would be around $800...you could do it yourself, it's really easy.....go to www.gelcoat.ca and you can order repair kits

Would agree with FLSeadoo1.....very true with his statement, with it being exposed it will absorb water over time.

It looks as though it has been beached on a rough surface. One thing that is not mentioned, is that gelcoat is not waterproof either. If a boat is left ot stored in the water, even without exposed glass, there can be blistering in the gelcoat. It can be very severe where you see blisters all over the bottom of the hull or just a few blisters here and there. They can also be fixed as well, but I would not purchase this particular hull based on the looks of the damage. Although the keel is the strongest part of the boat and there is more than likely more than enough fiberglass there, I would shy away from it. There are plenty of other good boats out there. Take your time and buy the right one for you.

I'd say just she that picture to a repair guy and see what he says...if the boat is what your looking for then subtract that price plus 200 for your time from the sellers price!! I repaired a gel coat myself...much smaller patch and also my fiberglass wasn't showing. M

Personally, I don't find the scrape bad. My 30' Scarab had what looked like that same kind of hull scrape for the 13 years I had the boat. I never fixed it and never any problems (the keel was 4" thick). When I was selling it no one ever mentioned it either.
But if it bothers you, walk away or have the price reduced for repair.
