Guys,

I know this is going to get me voted off the Seadoo Island but I couldn't help myself. The boating industry is in turmoil and I'm weak.....Weak I tell you!

I've been hunting for a good price for a Challenger 180 but the used stuff I've seen is nasty and the new stuff has been priced way too high!! I need a boat so I decided to see whats out there. I've been running parallel boat searches. I hunt for Seadoos and I also hunt around for deals on traditional stern drives. I've learned that Seadoo has purged themselves of much of their old stock and the new stock is not in excess supply. Therefore dealers are not offering unbelievable deals right now especially since we're in prime boating season. On the other hand, there are many more stern drive boat builders and dealers that are struggling. I hate to capitalize on others misfortune but I need a boat and they need to get rid of boats.

So, I've seen a dozen or more boats over the last month and they have been random Seadoos and Stern drives. At one point I put a deposit on a Stingray but had a change of heart about it. Just wasnt sold on the Stingray brand and it had a 3 liter. I was concerned that going from 310hp U-205 to the 135hp 4 cylinder that I'd be miserable so I backed out of that boat. I continued to look for Seadoos and other stern drives. A couple of days ago I saw a boat I liked. It was brand new never been in the water and had the right features I wanted. The MSRP on it was really high($26,500) so I didnt even bother and just left.

Today I looked at a used Sea Ray 185 Sport but again it had the 3 liter in it and I just couldn't get excited about it. I returned home and thought about that boat I saw the other day. The one that had the features I liked but was probably out of my price range. I called for sh*** and giggles and made a low ball offer knowing there was no way they'd accept it.....Guess what?????

Craig

I think that is a bad-ass boat. I've been searching for a reasonably priced, or well taken care of C180 myself (as you know) and been running into the same issues - unfortunately. I think the community here will be interested in your thoughts if you choose to go ahead with the purchase. So don't go away.... yet.. :)

I am assuming youll be out this weekend. Let us know how it goes. Take some pic.

Cant get used to that lower unit.

Yeks...that lower unit is like going out on a date with a hot chick..only to find out she has too much equipment below the water line if you know what I mean...:ack:

I noticed that I/O doesn't have a inter looping cooling system...That's good for a couple years, before you have to spend big bucks on the risers/exhaust manifolds...Been there...done that before, but never again. I'm a seadoo owner for life.

Karl

We won't kick you from the island. But we might make you wear a dunce cap.

I almost went for that same model before I bouhgt my 180. But I just couldn't get over the tail hanging on it.

Well I guess 1 good thing that came fromm this is that you bought a michigan made product and our state needs all the help we can get.

BTW, looks sharp. Hope you have a red vehicle to pull it!

Your boat uses the outside water to keep exhaust parts cool too.

Good luck!

Craig,

Good luck on the sea trial. Hope the boat is what you and Cody are looking for! At least you will have the summer and fall and winter to enjoy the boat. It is freaking 65 degrees and cloudy today...that was the high! I don't even want to know what it is like by Aaron..you donning a parka?

By the way, a saleman told me that the Seadoo boats are built in Bensonville, IL. That is by O'hare airport. I didn't know that!

Despite it not being a jet boat, I am sure we all want to see pics!!!!

Jim

Guys,

I'll report back tommorow afternoon with a full sea trial account. I'm already going to need the assistance of you guys. I want to quickly select a wake tower and bimini system. i'm hoping I can get a good package that are compatable.

Craig

This is true, and the parts are stainless steel. An I/O cost over $2500.00 plus labor to repair. That's not saying anything about the internals of the block getting corroded ect. I have owned over 5, I/O's...never again.

Karl

Guys, I hear what your saying and valid arguments can be made for both drive systems. While this boat will be an I/O, doesnt mean my next one wont be a Seadoo. If a Challenger 180 255hp presents itself this winter for a rediculous price I'll pounce. Lets say.....$17,000 :-)

Realy?! You buy a new boat and are gona stick 2 to 3k into accessories for it just to turn around and sell it 6 months later?

Laughable!

Rex,

Dude, you do realize I had just bought my new 2007 U-205 this past January right? Sold it last month. Trust me I didnt lose any money on that boat and if I chose to re-sell this four Winns in the spring I suggest I would do just fine on it too!

I buy right and sell right.

In the end...they're just boats. Don't be so sensitive.

perry, I'm not sure why you say, no more stupid jet drive, this is a jet drive forum, that's what all seadoo's are. I have had 2 stern drive boats before and have been on those types of forum's before, but now I have a jet boat and that's why I'm on this forum. If you wan't an apple you don't go buy an orange

Craig, it's great you got a new boat for the summer use, and the way the economy is now you did pretty good. Of coarse this forum is a bit one sided... I admit it myself...that's why I'm a mod here. I still own other water craft with a "Prop" too. Thanks for sharing your new purchase with us all. I be keeping a eye on this thread in case other members get a bit judgmental, and out of control with their comments. There's no plank for you to walk Craig...maybe just a little razz about not buying a Seadoo for now.

Karl

At least he will not be sucking in anything within 5 feet of the intake and lodging it in the pump. He can even change a prop in the middle of the lake if he has to.
