Gasket leak water leak with bad video. Help determining what and where

Hey... I think you have a leak. (LOL)

Ummmmmmm.......

Unfortunately... that's one of the things that's hard to tell from a vid. If I was to guess... I's coming off the head. I would pull it, and get a closer look.

BUT, with the amount that is flowing out... I would think it's more from a crack than just a gasket.

Since it's under pressure... I would run my hand around to find where it's coming from. (just do it before it gets hot.

It's the very back of the engine (area). Pump?
On the left side of the vid there's a brass looking stud and nut (top nut and stud). The leak appears to be coming from the center of whatever that stud and nut are holding down. The water shoots out in the direction towards the front of the boat. I'm taking it to the mechanic tomorrow or Sunday. Just curious of more of what you think. . .The crack. . .What would the crack be in? At this point I'd just like some educated guesses. . . you know it's a girl thing! I'll of course report back with the real culprit. But give me something to think about in the meantime. . .

I looked at the vid again... and I keep wanting to turn my head to look up. Since it's the center, over the pump housing... that cover is the exhaust. There is some cooling passages in it... but I really can't see the actual leak.

I really wish I could be more of a help... but I just can't see the source.

Doc.... After scouring the internet for pics of parts..... The leak is coming from the jet drive housing cover gasket. The video is showing the leak which is the front area closest to the engine.
(Video is taken from the drivers side of the engine compartment)
With this new info, would you agree?
What damage could this cause had I not noticed it?

It's very possible that the leak is between the mounting plate and engine. You can get the gasket from boats.net . I've ordered a bunch of stuff from them, and they can get the Merc parts to you quick.

What damage could have this caused had I not realized? What's your estimate of the time (cost) you think it will be to fix it.

To fix it yourself? Easy. Lift the engine, clean the surfaces... replace the gasket and O-rings... put the engine back down. If you are careful, you can do it without disconnecting anything.

For a shop... who knows. Boat shops are crazy expensive, and they may charge you 2 hr's labor. (at $120/hr)

The only real damage if that gasket was leaking, would be to over heat the engine.

HI, guy's any news about this one, i have the same problem, SC did you fix it ? problem solve ?, how much's the gasket and stuff to fix it ?...

We'll right now I can tell you what I know. The gasket that mounts the engine to the hull was replaced and the expansion chamber gasket was replaced. (By mercury mechanic). I put it back in the water last Saturday and it's leaking worse than before from the same gaskets.

There is NOT enough clearance to pull the engine in tact. So he had to take it out in three pieces. I have ordered THREE of each new gaskets. The adapter plate gaskets had to come from mercury as no one had them in stock.

I got mad yesterday and went a purchased a back up bilge pump and went out anyway. I've only been able to use my Challenger 2 days this summer and it's making me SICK! I've waited all winter for these few months.

Mechanic is supposed to start tonight taking it apart again to replace the same gaskets. Gaskets should arrive to me on Monday or Tuesday. I'll keep you posted.

As long as the water leaks are NOT cooling water..... Then in MY OPINION you just need to keep a good watch on your bilge pump and have fun until you get your gaskets. Then take 2 days to fix it.
I wish I had done this instead of waiting a MONTH for gaskets to come in and then the mechanic to replace them!
End of rant. LOL

Appreciate your reply SeptemberC thank you :D,...actually, i bought the boat 2 week ago, the last owner ran for month like this, he told me about the leak but he didn't know from where it was coming and personally i don't know anything about those engine and that kind of leak is very not obvious to find on the spot, even when we went for a water test i was not able to tell where the water came from but i saw indeed water coming from somewhere, but anyways at least i know now it's a gasket job :D..., well, will wait for the job to be done on your side ;) keep me inform :D

Thanks

More info to come. Mechanic sent me picture last night.

Yep... that's a Merc engine.

Tell him to closely inspect the surfaces where the gaskets go, and clean them well. The factory gaskets will have an RTV bead on them, and it will seal up small imperfections. BUT, if there is heavy corrosion, stuck on old gasket... or the parts are warped... then they will leak.

Also... if he's not a "Mercury" mechanic... tell him to make sure the O-rings get put in the base plate. (they just set in)

Well.....my 2000 Challenger 1800 engine had to come out in pieces. There's not enough clearance to remove it in one piece.
I found out that last time they attempted to replace the gasket without removing it and just lifting it up far enough to replace the gaskets. That's why it didn't work.
I just got back from the river after putting the engine back in and back together and it does not leak.

Off to the lake in the morning. After putting on my new extended ride plate (thanks to Aquaman).

Doc - he is a mercury mechanic but mostly works on outboards. Fishing boats.

Well... I'm glad they got it sealed up for you. And, I'm happy to hear that they confessed that they cut a corner trying to replace it the first time. At least you know the real cause.

Not sure what you meant by the engine had to come out in pieces. I removed and put back my engine in in one piece...and I have the same boat and motor that you do. Its just very difficult to remove exhaust hoses...but once you accomplish that simply raise it far enough to clear mounting studs. Then rotate the engine 90 degrees to clear fiberglass housing cover lift more and you are out.

I'm only telling you what the mercury mechanic told me. Now..... He usually only works on Outboards & fishing boats. He is part owner in a Pheonix dealership.
