Gas smell in Garage..

Hi everyone, I have a question. We purchased a 2 stroke 2002 GTI LE and have it in the garage. It is a one car garage and I have the ski opened up with seats off right now. The fuel smell is noticeable, but not overwhelming to me. My wife is worried that the fumes are going to cause a fire in the garage if a spark from a light switch or the refrigerator sets them off. I don't believe so, because my father always had snowmobiles and equipment in our garage and nothing ever happened, but she is worried. I also explained about all the other skis in other garages and I have not seen and stories about them blowing up. So my question is do you think it will be all right? Thanks.

well...u are going to smell gas a little because of the VENT line that you ski has..It lets the gas tank not build up pressure by letting air out of it..If it is really bad then yes you may have a problem but if it was bad enough to cause a problem it would be so strong that it would give you a headache.... Just my opinion but i always just open the garage door for like a half hour every once in a while to let it air out and i have all mine in my garage...

I'm no expert but my garage has a slight odor of gas as well. Yes, the vent line allows the fumes to vent out so you are going to have a gas smell. Unless it is over powering, I don't see it as an issue. I'm sure anyone who has a pwc in the garage will testify to a fuel odor.

most people complain of smell when they take seat off, i store mine in garage with seat off, it drys everything real nice also, but, i have a seadoo in there, generator, chainsaw, edger, 2 weedeaters, 1 riding mower, 2 push mowers, pressure washer, and 3 or 4 gas cans, so, i smell a little gas

the gas smell is reduced once you dry out, but ya I smell it too, just a tad, I crack the window on my side door just about a half an inch which helps, and it helps if the inside of your hull is clean inside as well, when my hull gets dirty inside after i've skipped a deep clean, and the garage smells better if I give the inside a good spray down.

Griz, I got a hunch that there is one more thing that causes a gas smell in your garage

Hi Captain, I don't know the size of your lot but i built a shed in the backyard to winter store my ski + all the yard tools -mower, shredder, etc.
I keep the generator in the garage close to the transfer box area. I customized a Tuff Shed to fit the size of the trailer with the bigger doors being on the short side.

Jake - do you mean it could be from the chips, salsa, bean dip and beer ......

I'm sure this will help ease the mind. buddy, unfortunately I can't build anything outside because i live in a three story townhouse in Fort Lauderdale and don't have a yard. I do have the seat and all off right now also as I'm working on a couple things. Thanks again, Brian.

Put the seat back on, and the smell wont' be bad.

BUT... it's good to let it dry out a little when you get home.


One thought.... when you are riding home... put the seat in the back of your truck, or the trunk of your car. (while towing it) That way... it will dry out, and purge the gas smell. Then... when you get home... you can just park it with the seat on.
