wife filled oil tank with gas yesterday..... :(

engine was NOT started.

I drained the entire tank, tossed a bit of oil in the tank and drained it back out just for that extra rinse.

if there is any chance gas gets in the crank case, what are the chances of catastrophic failure.

2 stroke engine will already have a gas oil mix in engine. your on the right track already. you may pull plugs and crank engine a while to help pull in the correct mixture of fuel / oil. I thought the oil side has a doohickey to keep wife from inserting gas nozle?

Here is a bit of copy paste from an article how 2 stroke engine works.

If you have ever used a two-stroke engine, you know that you have to mix special two-stroke oil in with the gasoline. Now that you understand the two-stroke cycle you can see why. In a four-stroke engine, the crankcase is completely separate from the combustion chamber, so you can fill the crankcase with heavy oil to lubricate the crankshaft bearings, the bearings on either end of the piston's connecting rod and the cylinder wall. In a two-stroke engine, on the other hand, the crankcase is serving as a pressurization chamber to force air/fuel into the cylinder, so it can't hold a thick oil. Instead, you mix oil in with the gas to lubricate the crankshaft, connecting rod and cylinder walls. If you forget to mix in the oil, the engine isn't going to last very long!

Correct, Im not concerned about the gasoline mixture,
but correct me if Im wrong, the oil tank all contains the oil that is used to lube the crank and lower parts of the engine.
Gas down there wouldn't be good.

The lower end on a 2 stroke will have a gas oil mixture already. The only issue you would have is if you have too little oil to gas. the lower end would not get the lubrication it needs. If you filled the oil res with gas but never ran the engine then drained gas and filled res with oil. you should be ok. If you pull plugs and crank engine it will insure that you pull fresh oil/gas mixture into the crank case.
