garmin etrex questions about maps

I bought an extra garmin etrex vista the other day as a spare, but turns out it came with no maps loaded, no data cable.
I've never really gotten "into" any gps, just clicked a waypoint here and there over the years. but I need a dam basemap
has anybody ever updated maps before ?
is it really just as simple as buying the right cable, downloading a map and then connecting the pc and the gps ?
without spending hours doing it, can I input waypoints into my "map" then install it ? (didn't think vista could do that)
does it make sense maybe to update the maps on my primary gps ?
i checked those and they are 2001. pretty old, but the river is still there :)

just thought I'd ask, since it might make an interesting discussion.

I've been using gps as a navigation assist much more frequently lately, my group has made an effort the last few weeks to explore some area's we've ignored in the past, but on a little handheld its still pretty basic assistance but good enough to avoid getting off track and running out of fuel.

I have two cables... If you find you NEED one to do what you want, I will send it to you with the understanding I need it back as I am going to sell my second unit.

does it look like this ?

I was actually looking at the usb one, since i'm not even sure if I have a serial port on any of my laptops...

if your "into" the gps thing, and have experience doing the map updates, maybe I can talk you into letting me send you my gps (i have two etrex vista units) and you can update it for me for a fee :) ????

(i'm also looking for one like this for a gps76) :)
but thats not as urgent, but while i'm getting all gps happy I might as well update that bugger as well, its sitting in a junk drawer...

One is new in the box. I will have to look at it. The other is in my dive bag, will bind the box.

Either way works for me if I am in a position to help you.
