Garage Heat

So, I happen to have a nice little shop for my skis.

And I'm working to insulate / drywall it.

I'd like to spec a propane heating system with duct work before I start the insulation / drywall.

(and finish the electrical).

so... who do I call?!

Basically I just need someone to say you need "X BTUs" and put a duct here, here and here.

the shop is 30 wide, 40' deep, 9' high on one side and 15' high on the other.

i have room for an 'attic' style furnace, and that's what I'd like to use.

I'd just like to keep the garage from freezing, so 40-45 in winter, maybe sometimes I'd like to kick it up to 55 to work in there.

ideas?

You have 1,200 to 1,500 sq feet like a house. Look up what those house units will handle. On the small sq ft side will just keep the place warm, but slow to warm up to your working in the shop temp (and save fuel). The larger side of sq ft will get warmer faster, but use more fuel.

Flip open your phone book look in the HVAC section. You have to take into consideration every window and door etc.....

I just have a 75K BTU Mr. Heater hanging in my shop from Northern Tool. No duct work, my shop is 20'W X 30'L X 13' Ceiling, it has 7- 36" square windows, 1 man door, and my garage door is 16'w X 10'H with windows. The entire shop steel construction and the insulation is R20 and the garage door is insulated R16. I did the heat myself, I wasn't running duct work as I am just trying to heat the cavity. Insulation is key. It will maintain mid to upper 40's without heating it for a few days to a week, but I work out of it daily for my regular job so over night I don't loose a ton of heat. Two of the walls are protected by 30-40' tall white pines--on the windy side.

But in reality if you want to have it done correctly, duct size, placement etc.., have a pro come out(or more than one).

Just go pick up racerxxx and don't let him leave until job is done.

That was easy enough!

Living in PA where wood is plentiful, I would heat with wood: These things are the bomb. A couple of logs and this thing will run you out of your shop.

Jake, Jake, Jake, did you happen to notice where it's made CHINA.... I thought I done learn't you better than that.

Kidding aside have you considered a waste oil heater, I've got a buddy that heats over 50,000sq ft. with waste oil, actually he uses used hydraulic fluid, he gets it free, he just has to pick it up.

My main reason for getting it is for the A/C, the heat pump part of it was just a bonus. The house has 2 fireplaces (one wood burning and one that I converted to gas logs) and electric base board heaters, but those are expensive to use, where the heat pump would be much more efficient.

btw, I forget what it was, but I bought something the other day that I was surprised to see that it actually said Made in USA.

I bought some WeatherTech slush mats for the Jeep the other day, MADE IN USA, really nice.

Thats a 3.5 hour drive for you!

The garage isn't finished, so that's why I'm going the duct route, and the house is propane, which I really like.

I think it's the cleanest fuel for inside the house / shop. No chance of a 'spill' no wood burning smell or smoke.

The idea of the heat pump crossed my mind, and in some warmer climates they are the best idea, but propane can really heat quick.

I also get propane delivered to the house, so filling another tank for the shop shouldn't be too difficult for them (or me).

Also, what's a phone book?
