Fuel-Water Filter Removal?

I can't seem to get my fuel filter to come loose? I have a new filter wrench, verified it is the right size?

Do I need to release the fuel pressure before trying to loosen it or something like that?

nope... don't have to relive pressure. (normally) it's low pressure at that point anyway.

AND... sometimes filter wrenches suck.

So... get a screwdriver and a hammer. Pound the screwdriver directly into the side of the filter... and then use that to twist off the filter.

It really shouldn't be that tight... but sometimes the gaskets stick... or the last guy just put it on WAY too tight. Putting the new one on should only be hand tight !! (Put a little 2-stroke oil on the gasket first)

Oh... needless to say... once you punch a hole in the side of the filter... it's going to make a mess... so keep a small drain pan handy... and some towels.

I was afraid you were going to say that!!! LOL

I have had to do that similar procedure when a friend came over with his car and asked if I can change the oil for him... Well of course the oil filter would not come off... Had to use the screw driver method to get it off! Just ugly, but it worked, I was hoping it wouldn't have to come to that.

With one more trick up my sleeve... That I have heard somewhere in these forums. I wrapped some masking tape a couple of times around the existing fuel filter. Apparently the paper based tape provides an almost sandpaper type of grip... It may also provide a nice dry clamping surface, where the old filter may have a thin coating of oil from being in the bilge?

Either way... I tried the filter wrench one more time before resorting to the screw driver puncture method and the wrench gripped that paper tape like glue and it turned off the filter no problem! Whew!

Installed the new filter only hand tight... I think the last guy either did not lube the gasket or wrenched it on?

I poured out the fuel that was in the old filter into a glass jar... It was nice and clear, virtually no particles and certainly no water.

So does that mean I really didn't need to swap in a new filter?

With a fairly short boating season here, how often should I be changing this guy?
