Fuel usage on 2000 GTI's, Wife really concerned!

We bought 2 - 2000 GTI's with a trailer for $800 in November 2013.
They need some parts, batteries,TLC, but are not junk!
An ever helpful teacher at my Wifes High School told her about his jet ski fuel usage. Had the same ones, same year. He told her, he had to get rid of them because they used a tank of gas in an hour! She asked me how much gas was in a tank? I looked at her and told her, the whole front 1/3 of the ski is gas tank. She is like OMG! how many gallons? I said 20 gallons or more, I think?
THE LOOK ON HER FACE WAS PRICELESS!
Well you know Dear: A PWC is a hole in the water you pour money into!
I let her off the hook a few hours later.
Is this evil or just payback?

a little evil.

but its not THAT far off, I believe you could run through the 15 gallon tank in two hours if you were running WOT.

I tend to completely ignore my fuel costs, because if I paid attention, i'd sell the ski's.

I know how much fuel I use so I can determine how far I can go before turning back, I just pretend its free.

yep a wot you can go through a tank of gas in 2 hours or less. however in the real world who goes wot 2 hours straight? that being said,
when i had my 97 gsx 787cc i can have fun all day riding on and off, take breaks, screw around wave jumping and spinning out and such, probably reach wot 15 min per hour or so, a 15 gal tank would last most of the day.

What engines do you have?

With all round type riding your fuel will easily last for a day of riding. I own two skis. One has the 155 and the other the 255. The 155 can go all weekend long and still have fuel. The 255 a days wort if riding if you are not in the throttle the entire ride. Stay on the throttle and I still get near three hours. But that is 65 MPH and fast and while shits and jumping waves ect ect.

If she drives like a "woman" the fuel will last all weekend long for her.

lol, yes, it should, except my daughter, she drives like Richard Petty.

but in all seriousness... even with what i'd consider hard riding, I have a hard time burning through a tank in two hours but i've most certainly done it, especially on my 1300, its very thirsty. Most of the time on the river we're cruising around 45 with my groups, unless we have to slow down for other ski's that are riding with us, and then we taper it down to 40ish. But the slowest ski in my group tops out around 63, so we tend to push it with some short high rpm runs when we're with a small group. We'll cruise comfortably on the straightaways then hammer it through the turns for short spells. If its just two of us, we'll sometimes "hyper-fuel" and run about 25mph for most of the day since we're just out enjoying the water and not in a big hurry at all.

On my 2 stroke I get about 65 miles on a tank, on my 4 stroke I can get 110 miles, and most of the time our rides are in the 60 mile range, then if we want to go back out we top off the thirsty ski's and go again.

My Wife is worried that there is a big downside to owning PWC. I told her really? With my and the oldest son's skills. If we can't repair them, they can't be repaired! I think the owner really did not want to put any money in them. They are not cherry, but not junk either. Just need some TLC,wax, batteries, filters, bilges degreased, gas gage and beeper. She just gets that glazed look in her eyes and walks away from us.

oh, there's downsides ! pop through a couple of top ends and you'll be fully aware of the downsides, but I just consider it the cost of fun, and the cost of fun is significantly reduced if your not out paying shop rates for stuff too. But by the time you add up the ski's, misc stuff, oil, gas, plugs, dock line, jackets, gps, gopro, ramp fees, lost hats, shoes, the list gets really long really fast, but like I said, I just pretend everything is free, and I NEVER take the wife to pick up supplies, that way she can pretend its free too. :)

In rough numbers, if you can pull it off, and keep your overall operating expenses roughly under a buck a mile, your doing good :)

with a 4 stroke your operating expenses can be cut in half, right up till the point when it breaks :(

Someone here put it out. Ride the Ski's for a season. If you like the life style / fun. Think about upgrading the next season. We are at the first season point. Plus I have a few friends that have SeaDoo boats. Thay want to meetup for a grill and boat on lake Erie thing. I can't wait for summer! We are all about fun in the sun!

We go to the Fairport Harbor Beach all the time. Were do you like to ride on Lake Erie? We have a lot of lakes around here we can ride too. Like West Branch and the Portage Lakes. My Wife is going to take every Friday I have off and we go play!

I lived in Madison for 40 yrs. I served at the CG station at Fairport. I know the waters well from west if Cleveland to a bit east of Geneva. I know love in Strongsville so I have been going out if Cleveland. But I'd meet anywhere you want.

Here some data on fuel consumption, again it is based on WOT. Gives a cost per hour to run based on $3 a gallon and power to weight ratio. Like the guys mentioned above, you'll have a hard time chewing threw a tank in an afternoon on the lake, if you just playing. If you do go through the whole tank you had a great afternoon.

I've got a 155 4tec, 40-60 gallon tank depending on how I ride the tank will last atleast over 3/4 of the day really, now if I was out just going completely full on from start to finish ( ie spin outs, wave jumping, racing a bit and so on) then yeah I'd be looking at about 1/2 day. And have noticed it will use a fair bit of fuel if/when pulling the tube as well. Then again I'm in saltwater just off the bite of south Australia.
