Fuel Pump?

Need some help with this one because I'm scratching my head a little. I have the 210 Carb. The motor runs like a champ. I maintain this boat meticulously.
The last two times out, as I approach WOT around 5500 rpm the motor cuts out momentarily. When I back the throttle down a little it runs fine. I'm thinking the fuel pump may be going bad and the problem only happens when the pump is at it's upper limit. Or maybe the fuel filter is partially clogged.
I put a new fuel filter on last fall when I winterized but that really means nothing if there is gunk in the tank. A new fuel pump runs around $150 so before I order one I'm going to replace the filter and see what happens. What I'm asking here is: Has anyone had this problem? If so what did you do to correct the problem?

Thanks

Does the power sag... or does it start to stutter over 5500 rpm? If you held the throttle open... would the engine just die?

Doc, the power remains constant, no stutter either. I didn't try holding the throttle I just backed off slightly.
Thanks

One last question... does it hit that RPM, and just stop accelerating, or does it rev higher... and then back down?

If it backs down a little.... then it could be going lean.

If it just stops accelerating... then are we sure it's just not maxing out?

Regardless... it wouldn't hurt to replace the filter to make sure you have full flow.

I just pulled the specs on the 210 carb M2 engine... and max RPM is 5250 to 5750. SO... at 5500, you are about right for max RPM's.

Doc,
Thanks for the help,

The best way to describe the problem is:
As I increase the throttle very near wide open, the motor sounds like it shuts off (like turning the key off) for a second or less, then returns to full power for a few seconds. This will continue unless I back down a little. I've looked at the wiring diagrams but don't see a rev limiter in the drawings.
Additionally, I've never had this happen before last Friday. That's running 50+ with the throttle at max many many many times before.

Thanks,

I changed the oil filter and added a pint of Seafoam to a full tank of gas. It didn't happen all day today. I used over half a tank of gas so hopefully the system is cleaned out and will remain running well.
