I have a question but its about my Yamaha. I was thinking about putting a primer on and getting rid of my choke. Can I do this if I don't premix? I would like to hear opinions.

i'm sure you can put a primer on justabout anything the thing you'll have to be careful about it over priming and flooding the motor. What you can do is put a primer on but also leave the choke and prime the craft a few times before you take it out. that way you have the best of both worlds.

You shouldn't have any problem, just one or two squirts should be all you need. You'll love the quick starts from the primer vs the choke.

Yes you can use it without premix. Your starter will last a lot longer if you remove the choke & install a primer.

Yamahammers....?

I have two Yamahammers, one Wave RunnerLT and a Wave Runner 3. The 650 has a vacuum primer system on it. The fuel line connects to a choke knob by the handle bar. When you pull it, it allows the vacuum bein created from the engine to suck fuel into the top of the carb.

So, this type choke system is more efficient than a butterfly choke. The reason is as Chester explains...........

When I bought "new" carbs for my XP, the choke butterflies had been removed, so I installed a cheap primer system and installed it in my choke button hole. It works MUCH better than the choke ever did.

It takes a couple times to figure out the perfect number of pumps (mine works perfect with 10 pumps) but once you figure that out, it is quick and easy starts from there on.

No premix needed.

I think the primer tubes empty out by gravity over time, so the first 4-6 pumps are just pushing air and priming the primer tubes, then the last few pumps are actually squirting into the carbs, leading to the 10 pumps.

I think I only paid $26 bucks for the primer system off of ebay.

Anyone who has a excelerator pump on carb should not need a primer, just push throtal a few times and should start. Please correct me as I can all ways be wrong. Robin

you can get a primer that fits a mid 1980's johnson 60 hp engine it has 1 inlet and 2 outlets for about $75 canadian so should be cheaper in the states it takes one power wire (activation) and 1 groun about 2 inches long and 1 inch around and is really easy to hose clamp to something and you can t into any supply line hope this works good luck

I have actualy considered installing one on my sportster in the future as I like how they work. They can be cotrolled from any where unlike the mikuni primer kits.
