my 97 gti starts and runs great for about 10 min. then it feels like it runs out of fuel,if i pull the choke out it will maintain a slow speed but when released it dies.read in another thread that the gray fuel line may give problems, would like to change them but what type of fuel line should i use. thanks.

1/4 inch fuel line.
my 97 with the 787 engine did the same thing.
Mine had all the original grey lines, too. I changed them all, but it still ran like crap. I pulled the rear carb off and the little filter behind the square block(not the roundish diaphram/needle valve side) in the carb was completely clogged, and then took the front carb apart still mounted and its internal filter was half clogged. I just pulled out the filter and cleaned it with carb cleaner spray, and put the carbs back together without going all the way through them, or changing gaskets. It screams now!!!! Had it still had some problem, I would have bought the kits and went all the way through them, but I wanted to be on the lake the next day and didn't want to wait :)
The painted over screws were really tight for a screwdriver to break loose, so I used small vise grips to break them loose and then turned them out with a screwdriver. Worked very well.

I would rebuild the carbs completely. I had the same problem. the first time I cleaned the filters and changed the lines and it was still not running good.

then I rebuilt the carbs with the kits from SBT, cleaned out the jets and needles and now the thing runs like new. Also do new plugs, clean out fuel selector valve and new fuel filter. Those lines clog up everything.

replaced fuel lines and clamps and cleaned filters, just got back from the lake and it ran great. the only thing im worryed about is the green slime in the fuel. cleaned as much as i could. is there any thing i can put in fuel to clean this out while riding? THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP.

I had the same problem with my ski 2001 gts. I just got around to replacing all of the fuel lines and cleaning the carb (without taking it off the ski, pouring seafoam into the intake). i would try a little bit of seafoam in the gas maybe, you may have to clean the carbs a few times to get the system completely clean.

96 XP, new to me.

I joined the forum this weekend and started to read about the wonderful gray fuel lines.

I still have the original gray lines.

While tracing the systems and planning my winter project, I noticed that there are 4 inlets/outlets on the top of the fuel tank. It appears that the 4 lines go into a common, large vertical housing into the top of the tank.

Do the 4 lines have to go to specific "nipples" on the top of this tube? What is each of the 4 lines for?

Thanks in advance.

The fuel sending baffle in the tank is labeled. The are for the On, ReserveN Vent and Return. The On and Res go to your fuel selector valve, the vent goes to the vent fitting under the cowl and the return line goes to your carb.

It took me 4 hours to get the expansion chamber and carbs out on a 2001 GTX. Am I slow???

Those crazy gray lines clogged up my carb. I will be replacing those now!
