Fuel gauge problem

I am a new owner ( about 50 hours on the water) to a 98 Challenger 1800. Ffuel gauge does not work and I read the post figuring I would take care of it when I put it away for the winter. My confusion stems from the low fuel warning that I got the last time out. Is this a different sensor than the fuel gauge sensor? My fuel reads empty all the time but the low fuel warning went off with about 12-15 gallons left in the tank. It silenced with the panel switch but scared the bejesus out of me until I figured what it was.
I love the boat, this is my first jet boat and I am really impressed. I have owned outboards and I/O in the past but this boat rocks

Thanks
Terry
