fuel gauge and speedo

I have a 96 gti the fuel gauge in not working and neither is the speedometer. I took the fuel gauge out of the tank and checked the float and it floats ok. I checked the oms and they are changing as the float slides up and down the tube. What do I do next. Would the speedo not working have anything to do with the fuel gauge. Also how to I determine if the sending unit or the gauge is bad on the speedo. Hope someone can help

Charlie, on the spedo sender at the rear of the GTI is 3 wires...use 2 of them to check for resistance, while spining the wheel. The 3rd wire is for a water temp on other models if yours isn't so equiped. Check for continunity of the wires feeding to the guages. If it checks out to the color coded wires at the guages than the guage is bad... You can't test the guages any better than that. Keep us posted on your progress.
