I have a 1998 challenger 1800 with the twin 787s. One motor runs perfect the other does not.
There is two ways the problem occurs. First, if I accelerate aggressively (low idle to wot)the motor will go from 1500rpms to 4-6k rpms and will fall back down just as fast. It will stall if I dont throttle back to catch it. Second, if I accelerate slowly it will idle perfect all the way from 1500rpms to 7k. Anywhere from 2-10 minutes after cruising at 5-7k it will fall off like I hit the start/stop button. Again, if I pull the throttle back quick enough, I can catch it before it stalls, idling back at 1500.
I was sure this was a fuel problem. I pulled the carbs and cleaned them thoroughly. It did not help.
I swapped all fuel related components from the good side to the bad..the carbs, fuel pumps, fuel filters, etc..still had the same problem with the same motor.
I also swapped the water valves on the exhausts.
Compression was checked 149 and 140. The one side has always been a little lower due to scoring from a while back.
Raves were recently cleaned and seem to move free.
Checked my waterlines for clear passage.
There is a little water in the bilge that I cant tell where its coming from. Im not sure if its related to this problem. I dont think its coming from the drive shaft. I cant find any leaks on the exhaust and or motor.
What direction should I take this ???
Thanks for the help...
