I had an interesting time getting my fuel gauge to work on the 97 SPX. I bypassed the fuse on the circuit board and someone here suggested in an earlier post but it still read open w/an ohmmeter at the connector.....however it I put the meter on the circuit board, it read correctly. I traced it to the dark pink wire that was open. Turns out it had lost contact between the wire in the potting material and the top post. I removed the potting material, remade the connection, filled the divot I made with epoxy and voila', it actually works and saved me some $$............though it did cost me some time.

fyi--using a ziptie as filler and an old soldering iron (or wood burning kit in my case) works very well for sealing up the baffle. Great tip!!

its pretty simple......seems like a fuel gauge is a good thing........they are kindof expensive to replace.........there's lots of good info in here on how they work......a multimeter is worth its weight in gold, and I know from the meter that the guts of the sender worked, thus its a simple open circuit that aught to be repaired.
