So, I bought a 2002 sportster with dual 717's. Port side engine just rebuilt the carb on it( not actually me- mechanic) I took it out for a spin when I got it back, and all was good. So a month passed before the wife and I could get out on the water. So we take it out, and it's back to same problem - runs rough and won't tach over 4000. So I replaced the spark plugs as a remedy the mechanic that did the work to it suggested, and still no joy. Ideas? He's supposed to come back Thursday and get it. Thing is I just paid the guy around 800$ to do a bunch of things to the boat like fix an oil leak, check and replace wear rings and replacing broken motor mounts. This little boat is becoming a money pit. He said compression on cylinders were all good. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the rectifier wire next time it happens. Fail common an affect how engine runs as it allows A/C voltage to the MPEM when it should only be DC voltage.

THINK you have two as you have twins. Likely one has been bad and the second is now going bad. Others will chime in on my thoughts.

So, mechanic comes out Thursday, first compression was checked. Both cylinders on the port engine( one that wouldn't tach up) are 125-130. So we take it out for a water trial. It runs perfect. As we're heading back towards the dock it starts the same symptoms. Then the port engine dies. Locked up. FML. So also discovered reverse cable was hanging by a thread. So mechanic says it's going to be around 1500.00 to replace the motor, 150 cost for reverse cable, and 150 to install. Is this a fair estimate? I have worked on my own toys before, but never a boat with a jet pump. Too many things to line up perfectly that I'm pretty sure I need a knowledgeable mechanic, I think the guy knows what he's talking about. But there again I'm a novice boat owner, is his estimate high low or on target? Or should I cut my loss now? 2002 sportster LT. $1800.00 more dollars in a boat that I've had less than a year and have not actively used it but about 4 times before this epic fail.

Also secondary question, would rebuilding the engine be cheaper( mechanic doing it)? My guy says he doesn't re-build, will only replace with sbt remanufactured engine.

Thats the way to go.
By the time you add parts and labor to piece it together it won't beat SBT 2yr warranty NO FAULT!
Or try SES is another builder others have had luck with.

SBT is the fastest.
