front bolt broken on pump grate

I got a rock caught in my pump in my 2007 speedster. I removed the 3 rear bolts on the rear of the intake grate and then tried to remove the front bolt. I did not realize the other end of the bolt had a nut on it. It broke when I tried to remove it. The dealer said the only way to replace it was to remove the engine to get to the nut that is under the engine (the bolt goes through the hull). This would cost me about $1000.00. Will the back three bolts be strong enough to hold the grate? Does any one have any idea on what I should do? Has any one had a similar experience? Please help me.

While I have not had to work on a '07 Speedster I'd hate to think that BRP designed the intake grate in such a manner that it would require removal of the engine in order to get to that nut. You might want to take a look in there to see if it is something you could reach w/o removing the engine. I know I would hate to tell a customer he has a $1000 nut inside his engine compartment. Where there is a will there is a way and I'm sure you can get it w/o removing the entire engine. Chances are also if the nut can be replaced w/o removing the engine then the dealer will do just that and pop you full price on what they quoted.

Yes- Seadoo goofed

When I picked up my boat two days ago, The dealer showed me where the bolt was with the nut under the engine. I did not see the bolt but he said that the mech. could not get his hand close enough to put a wrench on the nut. I am thinking about getting another dealers advice, waiting for another reply to my note or securing the grate permanently to the boat with fibreglass or glue. By the way, the dealer said that Seadoo recommended to remove the engine to get the bolt out. Thanks alot Seadoo for the bad design and the deception of the bolt in the front not being able to be removed from under neath like the other three bolts in the rear of the grate!!

I had that happen because seadoo it stingy putting anti-seize on bolts. I center
punched the bolt, bought left hand drill bit set (thinking it might unscrew while I
drill) and used a tap to the hole, applied a/s, re-bolted with stainless.

the bolts' located under the motor.

Thanks Bills86e. Was there a nut on top by the motor? Did you remove it top side or under the boat? What year is your boat? It seams that BRP put different ones on different years. I don't know if I have to try to remove the nut on top to bring the bolt down under neath, even if I use an easy out. Did you drill with a left handed drill bit all the way through the bolt and thus destroy the nut on top? A lot of questions, sorry and thanks for the reply. I have two knee replacements and can't very well bend much inside of the motor well to look under the motor for the bolt.

timmyboy76 Thanks for the reply. When you said the bolts located under the motor, did you mean the nut is also on that bolt on a 2007 seadoo? Is there enough room to remove the bolt by going up instead of bringing down under the hull after the nut is removed and the loctite or anti-seize is free from it? I know I have a lot of questions. I just don't want to make a mistake on this. It is a critical but such a small item. I am not too secure as I already broke the stupid bolt off. I have never broke a bolt before. Been an jet mech. in the Air Force and worked on mech. all my life.
Thanks for your replys-

hey stud, i was refer'n to his post, that the bolt/nut ur try'n to reach is under the motor. think is way, is just "in general".
what if, but dont know it can be reached, is, go to Harbor Freight, get the size wrench you need, and seems that, the "mechanic" couldnt reach it, so , get the wrench, cut it, weld bar to it, so then, you have the length, giving that, it'll bend around/get under motor with it...

I am not yet familiar with up & down loading of pics to this forum, but if you email
me Bills86e@aol.com I have a ski with the engine & all out and will right now
take a good pic to send you showing you how and where in the floor of the ski
engine compartment the nut. ok....done it, . Looks like its counterbored, nut is
covered with silicone and a circle of what appeares to be Duct Tape. Ick. it is
all sticky. They probbly imbedded like furniture manufactureres imbedd their nuts.
MAYBE I am in wrong forum as I just noticed you are talking jetboat? I
must appologize as my forte is skis. Can one of you boat guys jump in.

could you get to it with just removeing the motore mount bolts from the motor and lifting the motor up a little? cheaper and faster than removeing the entire motor. Have you tried the cheap employement of a neighborhood kid with small arms and hands to put a wrench on it for you?

If lifting the motor make sure you leave the motor mounts attached to the hull so you will not have to realign it. misalignment will tear up a pump, cause vibration, and most importantly... Reduce speed :)
