Ok I changed my oil. I used a paper towel to wipe out the excess oil at the bottom of the oil filter receiver. I found metal flakes on the towel and on the filter. Should I be worried?

The filter is doing it's job. I have not found any thing on the inside (outgoing, I think it's outgoing). The boat is idling like a champ. I have ran it for two seasons and it's always have been strong.

A 9 year old boat with numerous oil changes and now flakes.Somethings rubbing? Maybe a bearing?Ive heard of scoring on oil pumps but haven't seen any pics. You want to find out soon.Is there any threads on oil pump scoring?

I did a bunch of reading around and some say it's normal. I am going to sit tight and let the experts on this answer. Beside I will be changing the oil on my RXT soon and I will do the same check (same engine).

Its normal. I was worried about the same thing but thru hrs of research I found its normal. They say some gears on the oil pump rub a bit.

The size of some of those metal bits concern me, what I see coming out of the filter pleats when I service those is more of an oily metallic like paste the consistency of buffing compound from normal wear and tear, the particulates being so fine you can't make one out from another.

What you have there is something entirely different than what I see in a routine oil/filter service, backlash on oil pump gears could certainly cause that, probably well beyond the point of normal at this stage. Whatever the cause is, I think it's reasonable to say it's given fair warning for further investigation at this point.

Great Advice and this is why I love this forum. I did a bunch of research on the oil pumps. It looks like there is two?, one in the PTO and one forward?

This the oil change from last years running. I had an issue where the prop moved forward driving the button into the PTO turning the button into trash. I wonder if the splines where nicked causing this issue.

That could be the possible cause.

I wouldnt worry about it man, I have changed my boat- twin engine, 3 other guys boats from 2004-2007 and 6 or so skis and EVERY motor had these metal bits. Some more than others but from your pics I dont see anything alarming.

Camera flash didnt work but I have these same shavings.
