Quick question...Can I use a bolt style flywheel removal tool [the one with the metal plate in the middle]or do I need to get the special mercury bolt in the center tool?
Make sure your bolts are long enough to go through the bottom of the through holes in the flywheel to engage the entire thread else you might pull the threads out. Just be careful not to run the bolt too far down as to damage the stator coils and stuff under the flywheel.
The cheap cast pullers will bend and crack sometimes before the wheel comes off but you might get by. Douse the shaft and down the keyway with transmission fluid+acetone mixed 50/50 to help things along and loosen the factory locktite adhesive locker.
Otherwise, the one I've used for years is HEAVY DUTY 5/8" plate steel, might actually be the Mercury tool but I think I bought it off the snap-on truck. Maybe NAPA has it too?
You can use a regular puller, if your flywheel has the bolt holes in it. But I recommend getting the thread-in Merc tool. That way, there's no chance of collateral damage.
I got mine from eaby, and it's a puller and lift eye... and I think it was only $35.
I bought that exact HF puller last year and could not get the flywheel off of a 951. The cheap bolts snapped and even after replacing them i couldn't get it to budge. I wouldn't waste the $12.
The package says grade 5 bolts which should be sufficient for a non stuck part. I'll try it under medium pressure but will not push it. Thanks for the heads up
HF product is good for brute force....anything that has a gauge or reading your better off using a toothbrush! Keep your receipt and they will honor returns.
