Literally was sitting still when it happened....took one good wave and threw my passenger off balance which threw me off balance. Got it flipped back over within a couple minutes, and started right back up. But as it started it blew smoke out the ass end. Only lasted about 3 seconds and it was gone.

Keeping in mind these are new skis we are just breaking in, and we only have 4-5 hours on them, is this smoke normal or should I be concerned?

Kept them out for another hour and it seemed to be running fine. No issues I could see or feel.

Did you follow the directions to rotate the ski in the correct direction on the back? There should be a sticker on the back of the ski that looked similar to this..

As I am looking at that image though, I am pretty sure my husband had me flip it the opposite direction. We did run it for a hour to an hr and a half after the flip though. Didn't see or feel anything operating differently, so hopefully it's ok and I will flip it the right way if it happens again.

It may be different directions for other models. I think you'd be fine if you ran it that long afterwards. It would have burned up water if it were there. I don't think there would be any damage to the Piston heads, unless you left it upside-down long or flipped it the wrong way.

When a ski sits upside down for a bit, turning it in the right direction is important. When it is a quickie you will normally not have an issue. If you ran it for an hour after the fact, you are good to go.

Now you know that you, going into the water, is better than the ski being upside down and you, still in the water. You need to learn to let go and fall off, and the ski will stay upright. I read your thread about break in, and know that you are new, and this is something else that is learned by experience. If the ski is upside down too long, water can flow into the motor and lock it because water doesn't compress like air. The you have take the spark plugs out and purge the water, plus towing which there is a procedure for. Premium membership gives you access to the shop manuals for these machines and is worth every penny of the cost. Read the sections about tip over, towing and off season maintenance and save yourself even more money. Have a great safe summer.

It sounds like what happened is that while the ski was upside down. A small amount of oil seeped past the rings and was burned off in just a minute.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine over Memorial Day weekend. We even pulled it up on bank and checked the oil on the dip stick for water in the oil and there was none. His ran great the rest of the weekend.

Thank you for the advice!! I will definitely look into the manual. We may need it

I never thought I would be able to flip my 2016 GTR 215. However, I've managed to do it twice now.

Once was when I was going very slow and had a passenger on board. He didn't do as I asked and with a high wake from a boat, we flipped. Within a minute, I had it flipped up right and I didn't do it the correct way. It smoked for about 30 seconds. No big deal. It ran fine.

Then, just today, I was out in the Bay by myself. I hit a 2' wave wrong and I was thrown off the ski and the ski was rolled over when I came up out of the water 50' away from it. I swan to it quickly and then, did the correct method of rolling it upright. Started it and she smoked for about 45 seconds. As soon as I got on the gas, she cleared out and was fine.

Here's the thing. Water DOES NOT COMPRESS. Had water of gotten into the cylinders, you'd have known it immediately. You're good to go. However, like me, ensure the next time you roll it over to upright it using the correct procedure.

There is no sticker on newer models. It doesn't matter which way you flip it back over.
