I'm looking at a Craigslist ad for a 2003 Sportster with a 155 4-Tec. I'm probably wrong, but I thought that 2004 was the first year Sea-Doo offered the 4-Tec in that boat. Can one of you clarify, please.

I believe there was a recall on something to do with the airbox, but other than that, not really. Make sure all the guages work properly, as they tend to go out and do some funny stuff over time. Nothing too big, but check where the drivers side,(stbd side) hatch latches. There is a metal catch. Look at the bottom where it is attached and make sure it is not completely broken through. Mine was and I had to fabricate a small metal backing plate, which did the trick. The non SC engine is pretty bulletproof provided the owner has taken care of it. I would check the oil and see how clean it looks. The spark plugs are a common replacement issue if it is not running right, ie sounds like it is not firing on all cylinders and will not run up to speed. That is a very easy fix though. Check all lights and 12v outlet, blower and bilge pump. I replaced the radio on mine and was good to go there but mine was in a saltwater environment for the first part of its life and the salt water and air got to some of the metal in the radio. See if it has run in salt water too. If it has, make sure there is a flush kit installed and that it was regularly used. I am running out of things to tell you to look for, as there is really not too much that goes wrong with that engine. One last thing to check is the engine hatch pull cable, located under the drivers side hatch on the outboard side. Make sure it functions as it should and is not broken. I believe that part is about $75 or so for a new assembly. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
