Boat was running awesome....throttled down, took it out of gear for a minute or two while floating...put it back in forward, it revs like normal but wouldn't move...shift to reverse, it revs but no thrust / movement. Got it on the trailer, impeller is turning and accelerating as throttle is increased. I do hear a new sound / clatter that seems to be coming from the pump / impeller under the boat
Any ideas?

Are you identifying a new noise from the pump while running on a hose? If so, all boats make a little "clatter"with no load on the gears. Always the first and cheapest concern-- have you looked up into the pump for debris you may have sucked up? You might even have to remove the stator for clean out. It does not take much to cause problems.

Otherwise, drain the oil from the gearbox, look for metal chips/chunks indicating damaged or destroyed gears.
If so, you will definitely need the service book (avail. here) to remove engine and overhaul pump.

Thanks for the help...MUCH APPRECIATED!
The new noise is definitely more / louder of a clatter than before.
A couple dumb questions....where and how do you drain the gear box oil at / from?
I'd have to remove the electrical stator at the top of the motor to clean out the pump beneath the motor?
Sorry if I sound uninformed.
Thanks again!

Under boat, at pump intake grill- There are 2 slotted screws. One is oil drain, one is oil fill. However, you will need to remove both. If you don't get any oil, stick a small screwdriver up into the holes to break through "sludge".

Stator- as in stationary part. Yes there is one under the flywheel (on older engines). However, there is also a stator on the back end of jet drive. This part removes the "swirl" from the jet stream. Stator also supports aft end of pump shaft with oiled bushing. Yes, when you remove the stator, there will be a mess unless you are prepared. There are threads here about removing the stator. Hint: spray all the bolts with penetrating oil first.

Thanks for the awesome info Tim...Sorry for not replying sooner...I've been working 14 hour days.
Just to be clear; you think my diagnostics sequence should be:
1. Check pump for debris...possibly remove stator
2. Drain oil from gearbox for inspection
3. Remove engine and rebuild pump

Is there anything else that could cause my symptoms that I should be mindful of?
