I purchased a 2001 Sea Doo Challenger 2000. Haven't had it in the water yet. I am trying to start it before putting it in the water. When I turn the key it starts to idle for a second then backfires. Should I keep trying or is there something going on I should be concerned about?

I would say the backfire is not normal, you have a Mercury powered 240efi I believe, we happen to have an expert on these. Lets see if we can get some help. Dr Honda

Thanks, I did get it started but it has a really loud kind of knocking sound. When I put it in gear I can't get the throttle to move. If I keep trying to start it every so often it will sounds like I remember my seadoo use to so if I hurry and put it in gear it allows me to move the throttle and excellerate. When I slow down it goes back to the loud knocking noise and won't allow the throttle to move again. Also the throttle will not go the whole way it seems to have alot of slack in it.

Lets make sure we are talking about the right engine. Please post a picture of your engine, or post the serial number.

Regardless... Knocking and backfiring are bad. If it's actual "Knocking"... then you've probably thrown a rod. They will continue to run with one hanging out the side of the engine. (Ask me how I know)
