Finding Numbers on Valves

I tried searching through the previous posts here, but didn't see anything, so my question is:

Is there a way to find the numbers on the necks of the valves without tearing the head down? I pulled the valve cover and stuck my phone's camera in there, but I don't see anything visible. Is it even possible to read them with just the valve cover off? Is there something else that needs to come off other than the valve cover? What am I missing?

You should be able to see the numbers by simply removing the valve cover.

"There is a part number stamped into the valve just above where the keepers go on the stem. If the number starts with a 72 it is a old style valve. If it starts with a 75 it is a new style valve."
