'99 Challanger 1800 with two 110hp 787's.
Both are running well but one has a drip coming from what look like freeze-plugs on the underside of the 'tuning pipe' (I think I've seen it called) of the exhaust; it's the pipe that's about 6" round at one end & 3" round at the other. The one has a pretty good drip & the other gets just slightly damp.
I've read posts about getting these tig-welded. Will waiting lead to damage/problems? Are there any other options? (JB Weld, etc.) Is a weld as good as replacing them?
Thanks for any advice.

i should add, the 'freeze-plugs' that are on the top look perfect; it's only the ones on the underside that 'leak'.

I TIG welded mine. Do it once, do it right (my view) I know some others have used JB Weld with good results.
You can't replace them as the plugs are welded into the pipe. What ever you decide to do, make sure you clean it well before welding/JB Weld to get both of them to stick the best they can

You can run it as long as you're not reducing the cooling water flow to the engine or exhaust pipe. While not ideal, I suspect you're OK with it

Read the information " inside the 787" here on the forum.
It talks about this problem and the the "right why to fix it". It also talks about the JB weld. I read the article and the next day, I had the same problem that you are having now. I cleaned the area and used the JB weld and it has fixed the problem for now. However I have already talked to the welding shop to have the problem "fixed correctly"

There is such a minor amount of water coming out, I doubt it's going to hurt the cooling of the systems. Nor is it adding a lot to the bilge pump working.
so, I'll probably keep my eye on it for the summer & plan to pull them both over the winter to have them welded, unless it gets worse. The JB Weld might get me through if it does.

Thanks for the advice!

once you get a pin hole it will only get worse fast. you will find once you start grinding them down to weld or jb you will find they are more corroded then you think. Do both sides when you decide to weld them.

I had the problem last year, I used JB weld and it held Ok for a while .. Even after cleaning them really good the corrosion continued and I had another couple of small leaks. Moral of the story JB weld will get you throught the season.. I pulled mine over the winter and had them welded..

Water water everywhere

Sounds like we are all going to be busy this off season. And the welding shop is going to be busy. Maybe we should all get together and get a group discount from a welder.

As almost everyone said, keep an eye on it when you grease your pto and order the seals needed to get-er-done in the off season unless an emergency develops, it is a rather simple repair so get ready with the new seals.

Port side all welded up & I have new gaskets. Question on the sealant to use on the end with the copper gasket (under the big clamp): what type of sealant is best" What was there was orangish. I bought the Permatex UltraCopper RTV sealant, hoping that was good. Is it ok?

i had the same problem on my '97 xp just last week. removed the pipe got it welded for $31 from a drag shop that could weld aluminum and installed it again all in one day. the sealant on the exhaust under the big clamp is red liquid gasket. you can get it at any pep boys or autozone (that where i got mine) just make sure its for high heat uses. it should be $7 dollars for the tube and thats enough for about 5-7 of those pipes...so plenty

Well, I got it all back together today, even changed the pump oil in both pumps! She ran like a champ this evening! Nearly 50MPH with three people in a pretty good chop. So nice to be back out there!
Very glad I did the pump oil, BTW. There was just a little water in both sides, but it was mostly oil. Odd that both sides had some but I don't know when they were changed last. We bought it in '10 but I don't know if/when the previous owner had it changed although he was fairly meticulous about things so I'm guessing it was done at least every other year. I'll be doing them every fall from now on!
