Hello all,

We picked up a 2001 Challenger 2000 at the beginning of the summer and it has been a blast. Here is my problem, we will be cruising the lake for an hour or so then shut the ignition off to take a break and swim and it will not restart until we let it sit for 30 to 45 minutes. We always trickle charge the batt. prior to any trips to the lake. It also occasionally dies at slower rpms but then will usually restart with no problem. Please help.

It' could be a few things.

1) Port side temp sender can make it run rich.

AND

2) The TPS can make it run rich.

They can also both make it have a low idle, and stall if they have gone bad.

AND... when you go to re-start it... do you open the engine compartment, or run your blower for a few min first? If you have an exhaust leak... it could fill the engine compartment with CO, and it won't start. (or aggravate the rich condition of a bad sender)

I'll just replace both and hope that helps. I always run the blower in fear of blowing up the boat per the warning labels. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Ouch, I just looked up the sender price since it seems to be a hot topic on the Seadoo forums. I will definitely be testing the tps.

Well I had the boat out at the lake yesterday and the port side temp sender fixed the restarting issue. I did run into a couple more issues.

1. How do I adjust the alignment of the steering? It pulls hard to the right so much that the left assisted steering barley kicks on.

2. The boat dies intermittently in mid rpms. Not sure if this is related but my boat does not smoke at all compared to other owners boats I have read about (maybe running too rich). I have to gun it to full throtle to save it from stalling.

Any suggestions on where I should start looking?

Sorry... I must have missed it.

1) The only adjustment for the steering is to center the wheel. If the boat it "Pulling" one way or the other... it could be from weight distribution, or a tweak in the ride plate.

When I first bought my Islandia... it pulled bad. (to the right) But that first trip out, I was by myself. (and sitting on the right side) I found if I keep my water tank full... or send my kids to the other side of the boat... it will go straight.

But, with that said... you can tweak the ride plate to help. (There was a thread on it)

2) That's not good. How is it dying?

A) Is it's sputtering/coughing, and loosing RPM?

OR

B) Is it like someone is turning the key off? (instant)

If it's "A"... then look for a fuel related issue. (Check the filters, and pressure at the vapor separator)

If it's "B"... then it could be a failing guardian.

Thanks for the reply.

It cuts out instantly as I start to give it gas from idle. It can save it from dying by giving it full throtle and then its fine until I go from idle to mid throtle again.

When the steering wheel is straight, the nozzle that directs the flow of water is slightly pointing to the port side. This happened while I was on the water racing back to the dock trying to beat the rain in fast wind and rough water. Im almost positive this is a steering wheel to flow director adjustment.

Thanks again for the help, this is all new to me.

If you get the RPM's up... as you back down... will it try to die that direction too?

Is there a lot of smoke at idle? What is your idle RPM?

Once I give it full throtle it will not die if I back it down to mid throtle, it only dies when going to mid throtle from idle. The boat does not smoke at all which is why I thought initially it was running too rich and not receiving enough oil. I think it idles around 1k.

Well... a rich mix (even too much fuel) will cause smoke. But... just as a curiosity... what oil are you running? (low smoke is good for most people)

But... if there is ZERO smoke... even when cold, or at idle... then the oil pump could be miss adjusted, or something could be plugged up. Since the engine won't run very long without oil... I don't know if we need to worry about that. (yet)

Did you check the output of the TPS yet? If there is a dead spot in it... then the ECU could get confused as you are opening the throttle.
