Hello
I purchased a 2000 speedster 240 efi unfortunately the engine is stuck.
do anyone know what could be the problem?or what the most common problem is usually.
the guy I bought it from said it just stop. I have not opened the engine yet. cold it may just be jet that is stuck?

grateful for any help

sorry for my bad english

They don't just get "stuck". You have a somewhat unique engine being that it is Mercury built. Dr Honda can likely give good advice.

going to take out the engine this wekend but before I do it wont to know if it can be just the jet ?

Under the boat are two gear oil drain plugs for the jet pump gear box, check gear oil condition for possible transmission trouble. One plug is the fill and the 2nd plug is vent while filling, it has a tube that goes up into the gear case.

There is also a small oil reservoir just aft of the impeller prop for the rear impeller shaft bearings, this might have contaminated (or lack of) oil?

Hopefully the engine isn't stuck! If you cannot move the flywheel some small amount (to feel gearbox lash) it's possible engine has a seized piston or rust/corrosion in cylinder?

My thoughts

thanks
try to move the flywheel but sem to be stuck.
I can remove the engine hedds whit engine on boat. but it is possible to open the engine's "back side" to watch/inspekt the connecting rods and crank whit the engine in place?

No. I'm sure you must remove engine to enter crankcase. If flywheel cannot move a small amount it's probably an engine problem.

The gears will have some normal backlash play and allow the flywheel to move slightly.

The oil dive gear probably went and the engine locked up. Take a closer look between stuff on the engine. I'll put a guess it there that you may have a blown rod. I believe this is how doc bought his islandia and I've read other stories that were very familiar. Again, just a hunch.

Sorry I'm late to the party on this.

I'm assuming "Stuck" means it won't turn, or spin?

As mentioned above... you can not remove the back half of the engine while it is mounted in the boat. There are bolts that hold the back half of the engine case to the gear box. SO, it has to be lifted out. BUT, you can pull the heads off, and look at the pistons. If the engine is seized, the you will be able to tell from that.

Yes, it can be the jet pump that locked up. But normally when that happens, you can wiggle the flywheel back and forth a little. (There is play in the shaft, and gears in the jet pump) If the flywheel is not moving at all, then it's probably the engine.

hello to day removet the engin heads and it loock exactly as pictures on this another trhed. in 1 of the cylinder and head.

so now I'm thinking about buying a refurbished engine.
I have to shop it from the USA, it does not exist in Sweden.
someone who has bought a refurbished engine and is satisfied?
recommendatio of business?

and then suggestions on what may have caused this problem. prefer not to happen new engine.

grateful for any advice and suggestions.

It looks like this cylinder was running too lean, probably the fuel injector is partially clogged (thus not enough fuel) and cylinder was detonating due to lack of fuel. Poor quality or stale fuel can also cause detonation, as well as misadjustment of ignition timing.

As a result of the piston overheated from detonation, you can see it has a hot spot melted hole burned in the center of the crown.

Then after some time running this way, while the piston was overheating probably one of the piston rings was broken, due to it snagged in the exhaust port causing it to break. Melted aluminum from overheated piston transferring aluminum to the cylinder wall can also snag and break a piston ring.

You must replace the fuel injector(s) or have them cleaned using a machine.

FYI, this same motor is used in an outboard configuration as well but there's a big difference, the crankshaft spline connection to the jet pump spline has a different design.

When ordering parts, you must always confirm the mercury engine serial number from the top plastic engine cover to ensure correct revision.

There are many vendors capable of proving parts, here are a couple:
