Engine smokes at start up

Hello,

Just wondering if it is normal for a 2 stroke engine to smoke at start up. It will do it for maybe a minute or two, but then it is okay. It drives great, just white smoke at start up.
I remember someone saying something that you will see that on 2 stroke engines???

Thanks

You could have a crank seal that is starting to fail. If so, the longer it sits the more it will smoke at start up. Over winter it can leak enough to flood the
Cylinder and lock the engine up. If you get to that point, put a valve in the oil line and turn it off when not in use. Not really with fixing as it requires pulling the engine and normally a replacement crank.

Yea it normal on a cold start. My Speedster will smoke for about a min or 2 at idle on a cold start. To get rid of that just bring up your RPMs to about 2000 as long as that still aloes you to stay at no wake if in a no wake zone. If not just deal with the smoke. The joys of owning a 2 stroke. I went from a 2 to a 4 and now back to a 2 stroke in my boat. Didn't miss that part of it.

All 2-strokes will smoke! Worry if you don't at least smell the smoke, it's hard to see the smoke most of the time.

I bet the smoke you notice at startup is the oil lying in the bottom of your crankcase as it's being churned up by the crankshaft journals.

Also the engine temp is low, so more of the oil will be exhausted as large particles that you are more likely to see.

When I start my boat, I take it to 2000RPM right away if there is no danger to anyone's safety. About the only time I actually idle the engine is when I'm making slow maneuvers or attempting to decelerate. Otherwise, I need some RPM in order to keep the boat under control b/c there's no rudder.

thanks so much for your responses. We won't worry about it since others experience same thing!!

Have a great day. Sad to see summer on its last leg!!
