Hi, my son's SeadDoo XP starts fine but after about 3 seconds, the revs steadily increase to way above 5000 before it has to be turned off. This takes about 5 seconds. Is this a carb problem? It was run without the bungs in the back for a few minutes, could this have caused the problem ? Thanks.

sounds like, either carbs are stick'n open, or have an air leak somewhere...what year, and last time carbs were rebuit?,

Chances are it could have a blockage in the fuel lines causing it to lean out and over rev. Check the fuel valve and also for any air leaks.

Thanks for the replies, I was very suspicious that the carbs would need serviced so my son started thinking about what has changed. He had just changed the hood hinge and so he wondered if this had anything to do with it. He lifted the hood, started her up and it ran like a dream !! Turns out that the throttle cable was getting snagged when the hood was put down, smart little guy for spotting that !! So a 5 minute fix without using a spanner and all was well.

Hey, that's good news. But if it still has the gray fuel lines, it is just a matter of time till they puke your motor full of resin, from the inside of the lines.

Doo a search of Gray Fuel Lines, and you will find all you want in details about this.
