Hi,

I have been playing with my project 1995 speedster fitted with twin 657X engines.

I have run the engines properly on a hose today which is the first time in 10 - 12 years. ( I ran both engines on fuel dropped down the carbs for 20 - 30 seconds before purchase)

The good news is they both run and seem to sound good which is great but I do have a few concerns.

First of all is both engines chucked out a massive amount of emulsified oil from the exhaust when running. I believe this could be crank seals or it could be due to the amount of oil that we put into the engines before we test ran them when we bought it. The oil tank was still half full when we bought it so I'm guessing the seals are ok or is this wrong?

Secondly I have not rebuilt the carbs but the engines both start and run well although I didn't notice what the left engine was idling at however the right was only 2000rpm out of the water is this too low or should I not worry?

After reading online about the inner and outer crank seals I would like to test my outer seals, are there any obvious issues I should be looking for?

Lastly can anyone advise anything else I need to check or should check with these engines being so old and living in an engine bay full of water for years''? (Ps, I have already done the little oil lines and trimmed the ends of the bigger lines)

Many thanks
Andy

Due to how you stored it and the potential that the seals allowed some oil to pass by them, I would not worry to much about the oil that shot out...

Rebuilding the carbs is never a bad thing, but when it comes to a boat, they never had the Grey Tempo fuel lines. So,,, unlike a ski, the lines will not create carb issues.

Ok that sounds great, I won't worry about the inner crank seals at the moment, is there any simple way to test the outer seals? I intend on checking the fuel mix when it first gets on the water but I want to have this right.

Many thanks

Andy
