Do they still make the electric oil pump conversion kit for the mercury 240 2000-2001 years that had the plastic gears? If they don't, whats the best solution?
Sorry i dont know the answer to this but i recently converted mine to premix. There is a write up on here to do it with pictures. Just letting you know.
There's an aftermarket company that sells a pump... but it's not cheap.
If you are going to have your engine apart... you can put in the new style gear. It's much stronger, and will give you years of trouble free operation.

who sells an aftermarket pump? I'm familiar with the company who offered one a few years ago that went out of business but not familiar with the current offerings.
OK... if they are out of biz... then I guess there isn't one anymore. I personally haven't looked in a long time.
THe plastic gear is good for 10 years or so... and the new one doesn't have the same problem. (but people still worry about it) Going pre-mix will solve the issue... but it's a pain in the butt to mix a big fuel tank.

I agree. If i had a plastic geared motor, I'd run premix unless I was able to put in the new and improved gear. With that new gear, I wouldn't worry a bit.
It's a remanufactured engine from Crowley. I checked with them before purchasing if the newly rebuilt engine has had the pump gear replaced with the newer updated and they said that all have.

As above... the new gear is WAY stronger. The old gear was just a regular hard "Thermo-Plastic." The new gear is a fiber filled nylon.
Also... not every engine that gives up is because of that gear. There are thousands of Merc outboards running just fine with it. My engine blew, and I figured that's what the problem was. When I opened it up... there was chunks of metal everywhere... but the oil gear looked new. Needless to say... when I put the engine back together... a new gear went in.
My engine has 4 years on it from the rebuild... and everything is fine.
I bought this boat with the engine already blowed up, a big hole in the block. So when I split the case to get the shaft out. The plastic gear was still intact, had some play on the crank, but the splinds were perfect.
