Electric Box Cover Won't Latch

I have a new to me 2002 GTX DI and the cover for the electric box won't snap into place and latch. I saw the se4al was out of it's groove so I worked it back into place. It sits nicely but will not latch. It seems clear that the seal must hold the cover up more than designed.

Since I have the same problem on both of my '98 GTX Limited skis, I'm guessing some common solutions exist. Let me know what you all have come up with.

Thanks!

Remove the seal and coat it with some silicone DI-electric grease. When you put it back on make sure the locking tabs don’t get caught under it. It’s always the tabs getting stuck under the gasket that prevent them from snapping into place.

Thanks Miki! I will get that a try.

As simple as this seems to me right now, I have to update this post for the next poor soul.

All three machines that I have owned/worked on had covers that wouldn't seat. Each one had the seal inserted in a groove in the cover. The seal fits beautifully in this groove but when you put the cover on the tabs won't reach.

Finally with Miki's help, not just this post but from another, I learn that the gasket doesn't go in the cover at all. It goes on the box and then the cover goes on. The groove in the cover is not intended to hold the gasket. I just can't believe I have had three in row where the previous owner had stuffed the gasket in the cover....

BTW - when assembled correctly the cover clicks into place... music to my ears. Sometimes it's the simple things that make me happy. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Yes, the seal does not sit on the groove. Seen it a million times. It seats on the box before you put the cover on.

Lol I forgot about that small important bit of information but yes always seal on box not the lid, lol.

Just goes to show...the age old axiom...if it can go on one of two ways....invariably-> it'll always be the wrong way on FIRST.....

BTW: I always give a spritz of WD-40 on all rubber seals, rubber gaskets, hose interiors before trying to put anything back together.....just makes life a little bit easier in my experience.

WD-40 is a petroleum product and not good for rubber parts especially neoprene. You are much better off using silicone spray or grease.

MY bad...I did the unthinkable.....I genericized the use of the WD40 label.....I only use silicone spray but I call it wd40 out of habit.

Although...the website does say WD40 is safe for use on rubber....but why risk it when silicone spray is just as available.
