Can I run without the silencer while tuning my carbs? It would be kinda hard to get to the screws if it was on there.

I cleaned my flame arresters, but it mostly just got grime off the surface. Should I try a more harsh cleaner, get new ones, or don't worry about it?
The manual calls the 2 pieces: silencer base, silencer cover. So... I don't know if it's aka air box. I would image we're talking about the same thing if an air box sits on top of carbs.
