I have 96 sportster and ready to put shaft in for 3rd time (long story)

Before installing i put on the metal clip/retainer and noticed that the stainless steel seal carrier/support ring does NOT slide over the metal clip.

I put on a rubber oring and noticed that the stainless steel seal carrier/support ring goes OVER the oring and covers it and the oring forms a perfect seal around the stainless steel piece. This looks like a better seal.

Can someone clarify if the stainless steel carrier/support ring is supposed to slide over the metal clip or oring?

Again, when using the rubber oring it appears the stainless steel piece covers it and slides a little over the oring. When i use the metal "C" clip it actually holds the stainless steel ring at an edge so there is about 1/4 inch of gap from edge of stainless steel support ring underneath that is wasted. Also, when using the "c" clip it only covers 1/2 the driveshaft. Curious if I should have the stainless steel support ring cover the oring or metal clip?

Yes it should be covered. Make sure the groove is clean and the clip is fully seated.

SS is the way to go.. Much stronger and it is easy to replace. If nothing else, use the O-ring style but have a C-clip with you.
