drive shaft / impeller shaft? on 1989 sp

I installed my rebuilt engine today in my 89 sp. When I was putting the shaft boot on I went to pull the boot back out a little and the whole shaft came out. Is this bad? I put it back in gently wiggled it until I caught the splines and it slid right back in. Is this shaft usually removable when the engine is out? Does this mean I have a bad bearing seal?

The description is a little confusing.

Your engine, and pump are both installed? If they are... there shouldn't be enough room for your drive shaft to slide out.

what boot were you pulling? The PTO boot, or the drive shaft seal?

A picture would help.

ok, the engine was not in. I put on that little rubber boot that goes onto the shaft and pto flywheel. Then I realized I didn't grease the spline. so I was pulling the boot off and the whole shaft came out. This did not happen to the other one when I installed that engine but I didn't have to take the boot off as I had remembered to grease the splines BEFORE i put the boot on the shaft. The pump is installed but not the engine. I hope it is normal as I just slid it back in (the bumper was still on the end) and twisted it gently until the spline went back were they are supposed to be. Then I installed the engine.
