Drive shaft carrier rings

Was replacing carbon seals but the drive shafts were stuck. Since i had all new parts I cut away the old boots to see the problem better. My carrier rings are completely seized/rusted/heat welded to the shafts. But not really. When I look at the manual it shows 3 o rings, and the carrier rings on the shaft. Mine has no o rings and the carrier rings look like their on a sleeve about 3 inches long. After many blows with a hammer they still wont budge. I think I might have to cut the drive shafts in two. Would post the pictures but can't figure out how on this site. Any body got some ideas.

OOPS..Its not a sleeve, I just looked at some used shafts. What I thought was a sleeve is just the raised area of the shaft. I just went outside and torched it and still wont budge

I have no idea what part you are talking about? Post a pic.

Also... using a hammer will only cause other issues.

Now... if you are talking about "The Stainless Ring" that rides on the face of the carbon seal... then put a block of wood between the PTO, and that ring. Then, use a tire spoon or crowbar to push it back. There are 2 rubber O-rings that get hard, and it will "Glue" itself to the shaft.

Last thing... you CAN NOT remove that ring with the pump removed. It needs to be in place so you can have something to push against.

Thanks Dr Honda I could not figure this out. My manual section 8 says "Pumps must be removed" and goes on further to say " Slide ring forward completely" not rearward like your pic shows. I tried to use the attachments button to post pics but nothing happened, just gave me a blank window

Nah 1/2 inch cheater bar 3ft long 3 blocks of wood. Saw the rings move slightly nothing more. Sprayed penetrating oil wait till morning

oil will help. Like I said... the internal O-rings will decay, and really stick that stainless ring.

Soaked in oil, did what you said, and they slid right off. I went back to my shop manual and looked again. It said nothing about pulling the ring back to get to the cir clip that holds it in place. Doesn't show in the exploded diagram either. They do show up in the parts manual. I would have cut the drive shafts in half thinking the rings were welded to the shafts. Somethings are soooooooo simple, if you know who to talk to. Love this forum, THANKS

glad it worked out.

FYI... the early rings were held with a rubber O-ring. That caused issues... so the newer style, is a metal clip. That's just for your knowledge, if you work on another ski or boat.
