Doing a 951 DI swap with a 951 carb Jet Ski

Several months ago I was lucky enough to run across an amazing deal. I bought a 2001 GTX DI that had a rebuilt performance motor put into it. The engine is pushing out 170hp from the original 130hp.

I have never owned a GTX before. The Ski is a lot bigger and heavier then my usual GSX and XP. To me the extra HP in this ski may only help it to keep up with my smaller ski's.
The hull to the GTX was not in good shape. Previous owner actually cut holes into it in order to do repairs.
A friend and I did do the body work to the GTX hull and have it prep for painting however Mother Nature has not been kind to us in weeks now. I swear it has rained everyday for several weeks.
I have been back and forth on what to do with this Jet Ski. Should I sell the engine, should I fix it up and sell the whole ski, should I keep the ski.....
I know I personally would not ride it. I am not into the bigger ski's.

I finally made my decision. I will put the 170HP DI engine into my 2000 XP.... What better hull to use for the extra power...
So the decision is final. I am going to switch everything out. Lucky enough the GTX is complete and runs. I know I will pretty much have to change everything out in order to get this to work. One concern I have is the XP has VTS and the GTX does not. I am going to have to figure out a way to make my VTS work outside of the mpem since I have to swap them as well. Would also be nice if I can get the VTS to still show on gauges.
If anyone has done this before please feel free to give me the info on what you did.
Will keep posting as I do this swap and how it comes out. Now if I can find some performance exhaust etc... I will be in really good shape. Hoping to build one nasty XP when all is said and done.
I am also no expert but think I can manage with the swap. If anyone has tips feel free to post.

I have a recently rebuilt Sea Doo 951 DI engine for sale with a 40HP upgrade.
There is only 6 hours on the engine since rebuild.
Rebuild was done by Perry Performance Group in Florida with performance upgrade. Cost of just under $3600. I still have receipt of all work done and will include.
This will be a drop in motor including MPEM that was flashed for the upgrade.
Here is link to video of engine running. https://youtu.be/_WKqcYtQQVs

Yes this was my ad when I was thinking of selling. Had two people contact me. Both from Florida though. Was not going to ship and did not trust it to begin with.

anyway; bottom line; don't do it.

1. it's not putting out 170 HP. Sorry, it's just not...
2. the DI is the least reliable version of the 951.
3. you're going to run into more hassle, headaches, and spend a crap ton more than you think you will.

If the XP isn't fast enough, sell both and buy a newer ski... you're trying to make the best of what's available, but it's... just not going to work out...

I love my 02 XP. Carbs and all. The only mod is a Solas Concord 15/20 prop and brand new carbs. The best thing you can do is get it 100% stock and cleaned up... Not trying to be a downer, but I just don't see this working out...

I disagree with the above. If Glenn built it and said it puts out 170 HP, then it does. He has led the way in DI performance for the last 15 years.

I would like to know the details of the motor, he has built some monsters.

What would a 40 hp increase entail ?

Thinking: stroker crank, cylinder boring, porting, compression bump.... That seems crazy high of an increase but IDK whats possible for 3600$ or whats possible with the DI 951's. I'm just curious if and how its possible from a technical point of view.

Have not been on here for some days.
When I got the GTX I was given a shop manual from the original owner. It was obvious work was done to the ski looking at it. A lot of after market parts. In the user manual was many receipts for work done by PPG. I called PPG and asked what was done to the engine going over the one receipt for $3600. PPG told me over the phone that it was a 40HP upgrade. They said it would add about 7 MPH to the top end speed of the GTX and a much quicker pop off. This is what PPG said to me after going over the full receipt and what I am going off of to the engine. They built it and are a trustworthy company so I believe what they say.
Considering the size and weight difference from the GTX and XP and the fact the XP has a better weight distribution I feel the engine would perform much better in the XP.

Mekanix
Funny you say that. What you wrote is almost word for word what PPG said to me was done. Previous owner sold me the ski because they said it sounded different and were worried something happened to the engine. When I checked it out it seemed like nothing was wrong. It did have a throatier sound but this was due to the work PPG did and they said it would sound that way. Previous owner said he heard a knocking sound but this was due to no grease in coupler when they installed the motor. I greased it up and no sound but it was not the engine like previous owner thought.

I was unaware it was a professional build... most of these posts are from people who buy something where the seller greatly exaggerates the product... If it's accurate, that's amazing, but even seadoo only ever got 160 out of the RXX... and it had the exhaust/jet pump to do something with it... still not a fan of the RX hull... but I'd take 160 in my XP...

Even if, however it does produce 170 HP, I don't believe the hassle of the DI would be worth it.

I'd also like to see a dyno of both skis for comparison... see if that $3600 made a difference.

If anything, I'd like to see someone drop an economical 4 stroke in a XP or old GTX...

A 2000 GTX with a 110 HP Spark engine could be something...

End result...

I did not swap the engine into the XP. Once I looked things over I agree with others. Too much involved. The DI engine has so many more hoses attached to it that also lead out of the jet ski. Was not looking to make those kinds of mods.
I did get my hands on a mint condition 2003 GTX DI with a bad engine for very cheap and decided to use this body.
Since the computer was flashed in the 2001 I had to do a complete swap of all wires, mpem, etc...
Everything is installed. I had one hose I did not know where it went but received info today as to where it goes. Engine is firing up. I took to a shop yesterday to have an accurate compression test done. The compression in both cylinders was at 163 psi.
So they did increase compression. I should be finished with this ski today and will take it on the water tomorrow. I do not know what to expect speed wise because this GTX is pretty big and very heavy. But due to the discussion here I wanted everyone to know that the compression was obviously increased. Will bring a GPS with me and update on speed but like I said I do not expect much due to the size of the ski I put it into. PPG told me in the 2001 GTX that what they did do to the engine would increase top end speed by about 7 mph give or take depending on weight of rider. This 2003 is bigger and heavier then the 2001.
