Does anyone know if the tachometers clear lens (98 Challenger 1800) can be removed or the tach taken apart to repaint the needles?

Yes and no...

NO: they were not meant to come apart.

BUT

Yes: you can cut off the metal lip... and remove the lens. Then... just put it back on with black RTV.

It's not perfect... but it's better than throwing a gauge away.

so that would be the black rings/bezels that you see need to be cut and spread open to be removed, or do these get destroyed when removing? wow...

the numbers and dials are faded pretty good... wish there were replacements or at least aftermarkets parts that would work... ie: teleflex, autometer...

I read somewhere on SDF that you could send them back to the manufacturer and they can refurb them, not sure how true that was. Flip thru the phone book and see if you can find a speedometer repair/restoration/calibration shop near by. Yes, I said phone book, it's a dying art and most of those cats prolly don't know what the interwebs are. Perhaps they could take it apart and put it back together properly

will def check that out... but man I would love to do a custom gauge set up like the old restomods, if I only knew the reference signal from the engines for the tachs. There doesn`t seem to be a compatible tach, even in this day and age...

Faria instruments makes them for all the newer sea doo products. They may also make the older models. If so you can ship them in and they rebuild them and make em look new and send them back with a warranty for like 40-50 each.

is there a specific contact?

Thanks...

ok, just finished corresponding with Jason over at Faria. he says the gauges in my boat are not faria.

Email below...

Hello,

They are not Faria gauges. Marine gauges are very universal. For this you would use a universal outboard tach. All the other gauges are standard marine gauges also. For a good match all would need to be replaced. Check out the gauge sets at Boatersland.com

Interesting....especially since its not a standard outboard engine..back the drawing board i guess.

follow up email from Jason Clark.

Hello,

We did make them for some years. On and off. The signal for this is from the alternator. It is a 4 pole or 8 pulse signal. So a universal outboard tach will work. You can verify the speedo yourself. Take a look if there is a hose then as you know a mechanical speedo will work.

Sorry...

Don't know why I was skimming past this one.

The tach's on the 2-stroke Rotax boats were made by VDO, not Faria. Faria made some of the Merc gauges since they already did "Outboard" gauges.

The tach signal does come off the charging coil. BUT, I have no idea how many poles the mag has. In all my years of playing with seadoo... I never counted them. I know, awhile ago... there was someone who tried to use a std boat tach, and he got it to work, but it was questionable on if it was reading right. And old style outboard tach will also read the mag, but since they had BIG flywheels... I'm sure they had more poles.

****EDIT****

The early flywheels had 4 magnets... so it's going to be an 8 pole system. The 800 has a 3 phase alt, and it has a lot of magnets. Regardless........... they may READ as an 8 pole, since the tach from the early 800 will work on a 720. BUT, on some of the newer 800's... the tach pulse comes from the MPEM.

awesome...

edit:

ok after reading your post, I see in the wiring diagram that there is a box outlines around the tach signal, coming from the MPEM, does that me I`m SOL since it is a 98 boat?

I just sent VDO customer/sales service an email and we`ll see what shakes...

even their VDO current tachs diagram looks to have the same electrical connection as the OEM does... so maybe we`re onto something...

Actually... you may be in good luck. Since the pulse signal comes from the MPEM... I'm sure you can find a setting that an aftermarket tach will like.

here is the reply from VDO...

VDO supplies many manufacturers with OEM instruments made to their specifications. These are proprietary and not usually available after market. Such is the case with your tachometer.
We have very few after market tachometers for two stroke engines but we do have are in the Viewline series and are combined with a trim gauge. They are compatible with Mercury, Volvo and Yamaha engines.

Had my gauges out and the fuel / oil gauge dropped and broke the glass lens.
So.. I replaced the Speedo gauge with a GPS type (AndyTech)
I then split the rings off both Speedo and Fuel gauges and removed the soft white center ring and the glass lens.
I replaced the white ring inside, painted the needles and put the speedo lens on the Fuel gauge.
Then using a zip tie and J P Weld, I filled the cut off grove(like bondo) let it dry a couple days
I them sanded it and painted it (sm. brush) flat black
Moved the cut to the bottom of the guage and you have to look very hard to see its been apart.
